Started with this. Online auction. Flash grunty motor needed some tuning.... New Warrant of Fitness and Rego!

Paid too much.....

The drum brakes soon (within 200km) failed...

Packages arrived from the UK.....Probably paid too much....

New disc brakes - gold ones!, rear brakes with finned drums even. New wheel bearings, CV's, suspension cones and hi los. A rear camber bracket thing.

Then I found the rust fixed with news paper.....  and the paint wasn't that flash. Off to the painter.

New door skins as the old ones were so full of crap ( a bit like the seller ).

The colour grew on me....  but the flares I had supplied weren't cutting it. Just my tyres.

If you want it done right do it yourself....

Then I saw this.            Attached File  file_85.jpg   84.92K   4 downloads              and                 Attached File  picture101qa.jpg   90.12K   5 downloads

I went for these arches too. Just what I was after for the 13" wheels.

You are so lucky that you can do pretty much anything you want with your registration plates

My car came with this crappy tin dashAttached File  161807432_full.jpg   48.5K   1 downloads

As the top was cut to shape already, I used it as the basis for the new top panel, adding a couple of bits of wood and foam to form the front.Attached File  f.jpg   37.92K   0 downloads

With the dash space clear I sat in the car and using a cardboard template got the basic shape and drew out the gauge positions so they are not blocked by the steering wheel. This was transferred to a piece of kauri wood.Attached File  b (2).jpg   39.5K   0 downloads

After a varnish the gauges were installed and wired with a plug to match the one on the harness that I reconditionedAttached File  112.jpg   50.16K   0 downloadsAttached File  110 (2).jpg   49.83K   0 downloads

The wood piece is attached to brackets with two bright cap screws and the top panel has two small bolts under the vinyl attaching it to the rail below the windscreen. The top panel and the kauri board are joined with three bathroom mirror screws which come with chrome finishing domes.Attached File  046.jpg   47.81K   1 downloadsAttached File  044.jpg   40.68K   2 downloadsAttached File  126.jpg   42.13K   1 downloads

I made some new door cards to match the dash and get rid of the ugly brown.Attached File  048.jpg   39.43K   4 downloads

With new carpets it looks fantastic and wasnt that hard to make.

So the car came with a 1275 engine at 13:1 compression and ran on avgas through a 45 Weber. 300 scatter cam. The acceleration put a smile on my face but the knocking on pump gas did not. So I tried an Aqua cut spacer plate to increase the chamber volume but it was a crap fit and waste of money. In the end I used two head gaskets and painted the gasket mating surfaces with silver paint. This worked a treat although it was slightly down on power.  My thoughts turned towards supercharging. Then the motor started to smoke badly and a strip down revealed broken rings. It was already bored out to 1330 and not what I wanted for a supercharged block.

I saw a rebored engine on trademe done by a local mini expert in Howick. It was .020+ so I got in some .020+ Omega forged 18cc pistons to fit with the supercharger deal.

Some other bits came - megajolt ignition, a supercharger off a C180 Merc, a straight cut box with crosspin diff at 3.2:1 (from minispeed - Im cryin now), 1.5 roller rockers and some good quality double valve springs.

Attached File  20180112_134454 (2).jpg   100.19K   0 downloads

So it was time to get it put together and I took all the bits to the mini expert in Howick (which was now owned by the retired experts' employee) in early Jan 18. Wanted a motor on a box by end April. "No worries". Some time around May/June I went and picked up all the parts after a quote of.......around $8000 /4000 quid to assemble. And then some dribble about having to coat the omegas because they were a bit sloppy in the bores. what the hell????. Now 5-6 months down the tubes. What a cnut.

A mate suggests an engine re-conditioner in Henderson Valley WAER. I take the short block parts there and their mini guy comes out with a micrometer. So my .020+ block is actually .022+ and the pistons are .020+ where as the omgas are .017+ for a .020+ bore. So now I have .005 clearance - too big. I decide to start again and assemble the short block with the original pistons. I walk out confident I came to the right place. WAER charge me.......$700ish/350 quid to assemble the Howick engine.

Now I have a good quality spare NA engine for my other car.

Time to build my supercharger engine - blow through. From Specialist components comes a crank, conrods and main caps with a 4 bolt center cap.

Attached File  rods.jpg   36.47K   0 downloadsAttached File  crank.jpg   35.3K   0 downloadsAttached File  20180727_102755.jpg   54.57K   0 downloads

I score a cheap virgin Allegro block.

Now it looks like this

Attached File  20190517_102711 (2).jpg   58.6K   0 downloadsAttached File  20190517_102717 (2).jpg   34.81K   0 downloadsAttached File  20190626_111149 (2).jpg   39.68K   0 downloads

Now awaiting the completion of the mocking up proccess.  Then all the rotating parts will be balanced before final assembly.

Clutch will be a twin spring verto unit - its made but no photos yet. The best choice for high output engines as it reduces thrust loads
