hello, got some hycote black vinyl paint off ebay because i wanted to do the top and bottom dash rail covers. started the top one today, but i havent done too well. i cleaned it down and put on a couple of coats, but then it started to dry really wierd. cleaned it down again with meths and then water, put on another coat, and its ended up like in the pictures.

could anyone tell me what im doing wrong or if i should use different paint? i know halfords do some, dunno if its any good though.

Hmm, thats wierd. It might have been a reaction with something on the dash. have you ever used any cleaners or anything?

Maybe a primer would help?

I used plasticote on my door cards and they still look fine after like 3 years

try giving it a bit of a key with a brillo pad type thing?

err well i use this meguiars (spelling?) interior spray to clean it up nice and shiny when i wash my car, and i did use that a few days ago to be honest. but thought if it was that then at least it would have keyed properly after i washed it down with meths?

think i'll get some paint from halfords, give it a bit of a scrub to key it then rub it down with meths again. i just dont want to ruin the vinyl by giving it a key.

i hate paint at the moment, everything ive done on the mini has gone wrong, yet i managed to spray a vespa pretty well years ago. i guess thats just minis =)

cheers for the replys

very hard to actually tell from the pics..
but it looks like moisture contamination, were you spraying in a dry warm environment, or was there moisture on the dash rail or in the air ?

Also the dash cleaners you have used contail silicon, so you could be looking at contamination again..

Clean down the dash again and leave it to dry out for a day in a warm place, it could be your painting it too soon and there is moisture in the fabric.

i was going to replace it, even went as far as buying a lower dash rail in black, but then i was told that taking it off can be a bit of a pain in the ass! so i jus masked eveything off!!

also a tip that a mini mechanic gave me is....put vaseline on all the chrome work (if ya cant be bother to mask it all up) spray it and then wipe the vaseline off....it protects that chrome work from the paint! hehehe!
