How is a unit designed for a replacement bulb? My headlights still have the standard pattern and you can't tell from the outside that they're LEDs. The MOT is due next month, will see if they pass![/quote
They're not e marked, it's just the sames fitting a hid bulb, the units not designed for it, and give off the wrong pattern. Just YouTube for examples...

I've got LED bulbs in all the lights on the front of my mini. Makes driving in the dark a much more pleasant experience :D

What headlight and globe combination are you using? Just curious, because I'm considering the LED bulb route as well.

My lights are standard units, just with LED bulbs (H4 and H3).

Great, thank you. Have Cibie H180s on my rebuild, so LEDs might suit.

No on pictures - I will take some when next in South Africa.

What LED bulbs have you got in the headlights Steve?  All the ones I've seem online seem far too big to fit in the bowl, with a ruddy girt heatsink on the back of them they do anyway.

They are great quality and output is awesome but cost in excess of 600 but all depends what you want

So what are you doing about self levelling.

I got tired of dealing with bad reflectors and cheap bulbs with low output and decided to make my own HID Projectors.

MiniNewLightsinGarage.jpg

See the full build here: Classic Mini Projector Headlights

These are exactly what i am planning on doing. Far better quality with the projectors etc when done right. When driving at night the light output is amazing. I've had projectors retrofitted to my daily and apart from the company using cheaper ballasts etc which i am replacing soon (short life span, good light though) they are great.

Ill be following your guide mytmous, very detailed :)

As for legality i havent had any issues with my daily pc plod, mot, vosa etc have all had a look at somepoint or another and are happy with them.

I'm glad it's helpful. I know that some will go on about the legality without the self leveling feature, but I've never had a single person flash me, and you can very clearly see the cutoff line of the headlamp is substantially lower than the rear view mirror of anyone in my lane. And it's at the front bumper of anyone in oncoming traffic, so they are at least a couple feet above the cutoff. The main argument is "well people will be blinded when you go over a bump".... well even the AUDI S4 I've been driving doesn't respond fast enough to keep that from happening.

Above all else, it's better than putting an HID or a cheap LED bulb into the stock reflector housing. It blinds oncoming traffic, and the light output is terrible. I wish people could see a side-by-side comparison.

I'll be doing something interesting with LED's in the very near future.
