thanks for all the advice everyone, we have the defender for moving washing machines, so thats not a problem, its more the practicality of the daily drive, school runs and commute etc. Coming round to the idea of the clubman, so might get myself a test drive sorted out.

They are great fun to drive, if it has Chili pack firmer and lower springs with at least 16" wheels and run flat tyres beware of how much it spoils the whole thing though, we changed to normal tyres and some cans of foam/compressor in the boot this year and it is MUCH better! If you can cope with a 3 door car really do not worry about the club door, the seats fold up just the same as a hatch making it just the same but with more leg room in the back and the option should you need it for bigger kids or adults to fold the suicide door out. One thing we have found with kids in the back is that you sit low in a Bini front and rear which goes towards the sportier feel than the rivals no doubt but if you have small kids their legs poke out rather than dangle down making their feet hit the back of the front seats, I am 6 foot plus and can sit in their with room to spare yet my 8 year old neice's knees can't fold over the seat but that will be the same in most small cars I presume where the kids are too big for booster seats but too small to get their knees past the edge of the seat base.

Our 1.6 Cooper chili returns 45.6 mpg and we dont dither about much, tyres are cheap enough even for 16s and we fit two medium sized dogs in the boot

that the hatch or a FIAT 500 can't.

Happy hunting :gimme:

You'd struggle to get a washing machine through it on it's back.

I am a musician, there is a Double bass, electric bass in a case, 1x12" bass speaker cabinet, 2 PA speakers, mixing desk, stands and various amps and bags in there, Lol.

Good job Pete, my original post was a statement about the size of the opening, not what you can get in the boot. The height of the opening is restrictive.

Also thought I'd put up some mpgs. These are based on me doing 25k a year, mostly an 80 mile motorway commute with some running around town in the evenings.

2007 Clubman Cooper S - 33mpg

2011 Clubman Cooper SD - 50mpg

2012 Countryman JCW - 32mpg (I was doing 15k a year with a much shorter more congested commute and getting 29mpg in this)

2014 Countryman Cooper D - 45mpg (I had this a loaner for a week as a long test drive)

Up to 2007 facelift the Cooper D was a PSA unit (same as Peageot, Citroen HDi, Ford etc. etc.) and mpg was good 60+, but they then swapped to a BMW unit and people complain of not been able to get much more than 50mpg.

I'm surprised at the MPG's, even my beat up VW gets 45 (and thats before they started cheating on the tests)

My renault 5 gt turbo had about the same bhp as my bini, it did 20 something mpg 30 at best and it weighed nothing so 46mpg I think is ok for a petrol car driven fairly spirited, our 1.2 80bhp Micras were good cars but only gave about 50mpg, 4 mpg better than heavier 1.6 car.

I like a Cooper SD getting 50 MPG. I could live with that!

I am also looking for a Clubman to replace my daily.

I really like the Cooper S Hampton. In brown the interior is lush.

They do seem rare though and hold the value but I can wait.  :)
