I have recently bought a mini which i intend to restore and have as a little ongoing project to work on. I like the idea of having it supercharged however i am only 20 and have 2 years no claims so supercharging from the get go might be costly in terms of insurance. in the next few weeks i intend to strip the full car down ready to respray it, with having the engine out i would like to ideally work on it while its out the car. i am going to hopefully get it re bored to a 1330cc.

so my question is what is the best engine to build now with the view to supercharge in the future?

( i have searched the forum but cant find a definitive answer)

all advice welcomed

thanks in advance!

It's going to be difficult to build an engine which will run well naturally aspirated and take a supercharger.

The compression ratios are going to be all wrong for a start

A supercharger isn't a bolt on mod

Yeah I've been watching that and was more thinking in terms of what Pistons? Forged or cast?

You don't need to change Pistons, like someon up there said, use a decompression plate

I wouldn't use a decompression plate, better to save up and have the cylinder head adjusted to suite.

Dont need but might be recommended.  Vmaxscart recommend Omega forged pistons.

Yeah obviously, but they still work, many people use them with no problems

Depending on miles of when rebuild from na/ supercharged but to be honest if just go through the lot again when changing
10cc cast omegas are well proven for over 200bhp so forged not necessarily but if you can afford them then go for them but they only come in plus 20 I questioned it on tm but no one stocks plus 40 or 73.5 now, so it 1293 or megabucks as for decompression plate don't bother rather have the chamber opened up to suit.

Just go for a high cc chambered head when you do the charger. It'll need to be about 33cc to get the right CR.

I had my 1275cc unit re-built with new internals and increased to 1293cc by Stuart at VMAX. The idea was to re-build the engine based on using a supercharger. I installed the carb based kit from VMAX, then upgraded the ignition, then went full injection, which gave the most reliability, power and fuel economy. I can recommend VMAX - I live locally so getting the car down there (even not under its own steam) is easy for me when needed. If the engine is out already, I'd do it properly the first time round and have it built for a supercharger other than bolt on bits that might work.
