Could be anything from damp in the ignition system to slipped points/HT leads breaking down/dirty, loose connections to coils etc etc.

Check it all including earths and battery terminals

Check the HT out of the centre of your coil is clean and dry and getting a good spark.

top tip. when it get dark pop your hood and have a look at the leads. when running and when starting.

if you can see blue flashes running down the outside of them it is time to change them.

Go with Nicks suggestion as that is a quick and easy visual inspection. It may surprise you.

it often scares the poop out of people. and with the cooler moister temps this time of year it is more apparent and results in poorer running that was not noted in the dryer summer months.

I had a similar problem a couple of months back. Turned out it was one of the wires leading to the ignition coil that wasn't making good contact. Could be worth verifying the connections and maybe cleaning any rust off if there is any.

Had this on my old RS. Running like a bag of spanners. Opened the bonnet in the evening and had a cracking light show. Changed the bloody lot on this occasion.

Was thinking of putting a second earth cable on the engine and would the best place be bottom engine steady or is there a better place

Mine was running a bit weirdly last week, I heard the crack of sparks before I opened the bonnet, sure enough the HT leads were giving it loads sparking on the dissy cap.
