I will never understand why he got a liver transplant

Which one....?

He had 2 of them and abused both...

I never understand why people worship alchoholic, womanising, drug addicts....

I'm sure in his day he was a good footballer, but he abused his fame and led himself into an early grave...

What gets my goat is that WRC Champion Richard Burns, a truly talented sportsman, died at the same time as Best and I don't see any mention of him anywhere!
Richard Burns died at such a young age at the top of his game, through no fault of his own.

As I understand it, he paid for his transplants privately and if you can afford a private transplant then you tend to be able to get one, regardless of whether or not you meet the usual requirements for an NHS organ recipient . However, according to a couple of liver patients I've spoken to, the only organs actually available for private transplant tend to be those that are rejected by NHS organ donor scheme. So ultimately, if you're fortunate enough to be able to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds for a private donor organ, it will probably be substandard and far more likely to fail than one on the NHS any way.

None of you are sportsmen. I am not justifying any special treatment. But before there were the names known by children the world over there were the likes of George Best; If we don't remember his ilk, we forget where formal came from. And them we become numb to the modern world. Everyone loves football, log live football and may it rule supreme!

Yup, I stand corrected, his 2002 transplant was indeed a somewhat controversially provided by the NHS.

Whatever your opinion of him though, I still think his rather infamous quote:

"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds & fast cars..... the rest I just squandered",

remains one of the greatest one liners of all time!

My Grandad's birthday is 24 November...Every year....And this year I found a card of good ol' George with this quote on it. Both he and I are massive United fans - it was perfect.

Here is another photo of George taken in Manchester with his brand new Radford Mini in 1969. Apparently he later sold this Radford Mini and bought a Lotus Europa.
