Hi All.

Please can you offer some advice on a valuation? The car in the photos below is owned by an old lady who has had the car since new. Its currently got an MOT but after a recent trip to the garage she has been told the car is dangerous to drive and is beyond economical repair because of the rot underneath. She was considering scrapping it but Im sure you'll agree that there are better options. Its only done 32,000 miles.

Thanks for your help.

Classic case of oversills rotting the floor.

Will need restoration and welding.

Got to be worth £500-800 as a minimum for the engine/interior

Very repairable. Worth a minimum of £1k with MOT. It does need a lot of work but decent low mileage.

Nice wee car once sorted. Definitely repairable and as said already oversill bodgery has rotted out what was there.

They should have said - we can't be asked

at first sight it looks like a easily repairable mini

but the rust could be bad behind the door post / scuttle area

but still worth the effort I would think

pity it didn't get a coat of dinitrol when new

it's a good example of why oversills are evil

you can see where the damp is being held in the gap

Even a complete new floor/sills is not a massive job really.

It would have to be a SERIOUS basket case to be not worth repairing and even then they all still can. Just perhaps not economically. But it's a Mini, who cares about the money?

It's not hard to see why that's uneconomical by 'garage' standards, as its normally around £50 per hour to have patches tacked on over the top and slapped in underseal for mot standards.

The key is economical.

For the cost of doing a decent job you would be able to afford a half decent modern runabout. Whether it is worth restoring is in the eyes of the owner/buyer. As we are all mini fans on here I guess we are all biased towards saving it.

In reality, if you are paying garage rates you are probably going to exceed the end value of the car - so they probably given an accurate appraisal.

I think it would be worse advice to start tearing it apart and have the owner racking up bills without really understanding what they are getting in to.

And did the garage offer to take it off her hands too?

Seen a few other cars that are uneconomical to repair until somebody who has just said that purchases the car and magically fixes it.

Not saying it's in this case. But you never know.

Probably not worth her getting it repaired unless she can weld which is unlikely:-)

Nice little project for someone to have as a father son/ daughter project as a first car

Inner and outer sills maybe subframe £ 500 to put back on the road then do it up as you drive it

Definitely not a scrapper

Thanks for all the replies. The garage has been really good and delivered the car back home but it seems that its going to cost too much to be repaired commercially. I'll pass on your valuations so hopefully it will get sold as a project car.

Did the same garage for the oversills in the first place?

Also, where are you located?

Make sure the old dear gets a fair price if she is letting it go and not a garage or someone else just looking for a quick profit.
