Finally 'finished' my K-Series project a few weeks ago. It's been a long time since I got in this thing!

The Story

It used to be a 93 Rover Mini with the roundnose front and seemingly many many many problems with the engine, breaks, rust.

I did by best with it and got a 75bhp engine. However it wasn't enough. At the time there was a 1.6 Rover 25 for sale for about £400 in very good shape. So the choice was made it would be a K-Series Mini!

Anyway now 2 years have passed, thousands of pounds on panels, respray... and its finished... Kinda

Only got a few things left to do if i can be bothered to do it.

  • Connect speedo (It's electrical to a mechanical speedo, no idea what to do)
  • Sound proofing (maybe... it's my daily and i'm already going deaf haha)
  • Replace rear light seal [Complete]
  • Install turbo.... wait maybe another time  :shy:  ;D

Oh yeah it's called Rex because i was told it sounds like a T-Rex  :shades:

So the specs...

1.6 K-Series with the PG1 Lotus Elise S1 gearbox.

110bhp ish, and a fair whack or torque.

7.9" Vented Grooved Breaks.

10" Specialist component wheels.

Complete custom dash.

Fibreglass front end and bonnet. (clubman style for the extra roooom)

For the speedo you can take a rover electronic speedo and put the head into the mini speedo case, take a look at the 16 mini forum if you have not already ....loads of threads on it I think.

Welcome to mad bad world of 16 valves. Trash it to death and it will still come back for more, plus you get super cheap engines.

Before you go turbo maybe look at a 1.8 vvc swap. You will get 160hp simpler setup and you can probably get a whole car for less than £100.

Nice to see another affordable conversion hitting the roads .... Great job.

Still got my rover25 speedo, do you have a link to a thread at all? I've been searching for ages.

I've heard mixed things over the VVC, but I think i might at some point.

I think i can get my hands on the lotus 1.8 k-series engine pretty cheap too. My lotus gearbox cost under £30.

Although totting up the build cost it wasn't that affordable haha!

Go to the rover section and search on speedo. You will find it as the second or third title. I was mistaken, people swap the electronic sensor on the box to one that drives a cable and hey presto you have a working speedo with a mini head.

All the rover Elise's used standard rover 1.8 engines. So there is no difference between a engine from a lotus or a rover...well apart from the cam cover logo.

The vvc' are fine...same basic design as the normal 16 valver. Trouble with all the K series engines is everybody will tell you they are crap but all those well informed people have mostly never had one but their mate down the pub knows a bloke who's dog used to own one and it was rubbish..... Lol.

Think I got it, unbolt the electrical speedo thing and turn it into mechanical drive?

I'm going to be so bad at figuring this out  :shy:

I thought the lotus had a different throttle body, ohh I just looked it up i was wrong haha!
