Evening all

This year i'm hillclimbing a 1978 honda xl250. Simply because me and my dad dragged it out of my uncles garage, and i've been building it up over winter.

Being a 4 stroke single, its not going to be particularly quick, like i say, it's mostly for me to learn to 'ride like a racer'.

For next year, i'm thinking of building a 250 2 stroke to be on something more competitive.

However, it has to be pre-1989 to fit in with class regs. I was thinking along the lines of a honda cr250 or similar?

Any suggestions for this kind of thing?

Cheers all

CRs are awesome but can be a bit brutal for unititiated. I saw a guy flip a brand new one years ago when he ignored all the advice about slipping the clutch or setting off in second. He revved the nuts off it and dumped the clutch with hilarious consequences.

1989 CR250 EVO.

This was my thinking. The current class leader is on an '89 yz 250 with a 300 bore kit. I'd like something that'll keep up

How about a Yamaha RD 200, I had one in 1977, it was quick and could leave most bikes of a similar size standing, then again i weighed in at eight stone wet through so the power to weight ratio was pretty good....

Generally if you want to be competitive or at least ride a machine that is, look to the front and see what they are doing and go from there. That would be what I would do. Can't offer any advice on the 2 stroke front however, sounds good fun though!

What about a Yamaha ty250? Must be lighter, and quicker, than a full size bike? :shy:  :tumble:

To me the classic 2-stroke, a contemporary of the Mini, is the SAAB 96. Lovely car in its day and rare now.

Someone I know has one of these - you always know when he fires up!
