Pre Verto Clutch With Brake Servo

A few weeks ago I noticed my clutch was missing the return spring, so I ordered one and tried to fit it today.

 

Problem I have is the pipes for the brake servo are right in the way of the clutch arm. Its nearly impossible to get the spring to hook onto the arm, and even if I did manage to do it, the spring would be rubbing against the pipes (so I would be concerned about it rupturing them).

 

Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get round that?

I would say your car originally had a verto clutch Assy.

Its a '79 so pre verto, its the servo that has been addded

Change to a verto clutch and housings / slave cylinder etc or a remote servo I'm afraid

That being the case then, am I just as well to leave the spring off and wait until the clutch burns out?

Could you try to tease the brake pipes gently to give you some clearance?

I suppose I could give it another try, they felt very brittle though.

 

Without the pipes there, how easy is it to stretch the spring over?

You can get braided hoses to replace the solid pipes between the master cylinder and regulator valve

Really? That sounds just the thing I need!

 

Do you know if they are difficult to fit?

I bought some from mini spares with the intention of fitting a servo to my 78 mini. Haven't got around to it yet several years later!

It won't burn the clutch out without the spring, just the throw out bearing won't last as well as it should.

Easy. Re-route the hydraulic pipes or use flexible hoses. The benefit with flexible is the ability to remove the servo in future without having to re-bleed the brakes after re-installing.

If you do fit a spring, don't use the one that is sold for this job - it's far stronger than they were originally and far, far stronger than it needs to be.

Best spring I have found is a throttle return spring.
