Hi all , I'm a newbee to this site , just got my hands on a southern electricity van 1980 , brought from the company in 1982 , been stood for 16 yrs with handbrake on , dry stored so surprisingly good condition , was after advice on how to see if engine any good , what dos and donts really on try to start her , il get some piccys on Asap , cheers all

This sounds like a very interesting project, photos are a must :-). Can't really help re. the engine checking but just wanted to say hi and ask for photos :-)

It definitely needs some photos.

 

Firstly, you need to see if the engine is seized. If it is, you're probably going to need to strip it and rebuild it. 

 

Plugs out, a bit of oil down the bores into 2nd and see if you can push it and whether the engine turns over. 

 

If it turns over, change the oil, filter, coolant, plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, points, strip the carb and clean it out, fully charged battery, fresh fuel, prime the oil pump, turn the key and see what happens.

if the engine is stuck I find a bit of diesel down the bores for a week does wonders for freeing up a frozen engine

But do they actually last after being freed off, or is a rebuild imminent?

Depends really it being stuck doesn't cause an early death but other factors that affect all engines cause early death. I've never had an issue with one that was freed this way

My engine turns freely and hasn't ran for 25 years, Too scared to fire it up so going to get it rebuilt with a few extra goodies, that's if I've got any money left

grab yourself a Photobucket account and the iOS app. Upload them there and use the image codes to add the photos here.
