Later minis (like yours) were rubber mounted, and these can deteriorate over time, in fact it is not unheard of for the mounts that bolt to the toe board to completely break up. Yes it can be welded up, but check your mounts first.

It'd also be prudent to replace the Subframe to bulkhead mounts and also the Subframe to front panel teardrop mounts. The subframes flexing because the mount bushes will be worn. While you're at it replacing the upper and lower engine steady bushes would be a good idea.

If you don't want to replace them, they should at least be checked for condition.

Edit - I was writing this as swifty was posting ;)

I would drill a hole (1/4 inch) just past the end of the crack , to stop it - as they can carry on after welding

also support the body across the back of the subframe , to pull the crack back together (if that makes sense) when welding it

the nose of the car is trying to rise , pulling the crack apart , by jacking the body up , you are pulling the nose (subframe) back into place

I personally would go solid on all the front mounts before welding up

also check toe board mounts for cracks (will need reinforcing for the solid mounts anyway) & check subframe as well (cracks can hide well - look for orange rust stains)

how much rust around the top damper mount ?

Top damper mount rust has been cut out and replaced.

The subframe in not bolted to the body at the moment. The body is just sitting on the subframe.

Dusting off an old thread...

After replacing a badly worn set of front subframe mounts I've noticed very similar inner wing cracking.  In addition to the mitigations noted above, would there be any advantage in welding a small reinforcing plate over the top of the repaired crack?

I assume the inner wings are cracked at the damper top mount brackets?

Yes, very similar to the photo in Post #1 although the split is not quite as wide.

What my dad has done on my 998 was to find the end of the crack, drill the end(stops the crack going further) weld it up, grind back then seam weld a strengthening plate over the top

That's exactly the approach I was planning to take. Thanks much for the confirmation.

Attempt to remove the damper top mount too(you may find corrosion behind the mounts) what I do is do the welding to the front and floor, if needed, then stone chip and paint the complete underside and wheel arch areas, then paint the damper mounts and refit.
