Hi All,

So I have done  few searches on this subject and opinions seem to differ somewhat so...

The car is a 1991 Mini Mayfair auto and I will be cutting out inner and outer sills and maybe the whole doorstep and replacing. The car will be on Axle stands and have engine etc left in. How much do I need to brace the car? Will a piece of 20mm box section welded across the door opening do? Or do I need to make a whole frame as I have seen others do?

All opinions with reasoning welcomed

Many Thanks for your help

Will

When I did mine I didn't brace at all but cut the inner sill leaving the doorstep to hold everything in place then welded in the new inner sill followed by the doorstep and then lastly the outer sill. Nothing moved but there was enough strength left in the door step to do this. 2 bars across the door aperture will be plenty and do one side at a time.20mm box will be more than ample. Tack new panels in place then double check nothing has moved before you seam weld.

Depends how much you cut out at once, but I braced across door aperture on my mk1 and did as above, fitting new inner sill followed by doorstep and then outer sill. On my mk2 I have cut out whole floor including doorsteps on this I braced across doors, then joined with two pieces across one side to the other and a brace on the corners, this has worked superbly.

I braced across the door aperture, across the width of the car then added drop downs to the crossmember to prevent sagging.

Make sure you can trial fit the door when it's braced

Thanks for all the responses. I am planning on cutting out the oversill and inner sill at the same time.

Is that then the best time to replace the doorstep with both sills removed? Or should I attach the inner sill then cut out and replace doorstep.

I may be able to just patch the doorstep although i am not holding out much hope for that after looking at the mess the oversill has created!

Innersill first then do the doorstep. Have a look at the Project Paddy link in my signature, everything you need to do is there including the bracing.

Thanks for all your help!

Neil,

All your projects have some great work, will have to find time to sit and read through the lot!

I have seen some debate on the door step panel as the magnum ones are a crap fit, are there now any better ones out there I can get?

Thanks

BMH use the original tooling & jigs to produce their panels-

(personally i'm still not convinced that they're quite as good as the original Rover panels)

The problem with the heritage door steps are that they are almost the whole door frame, they don't do just the lower door step, and they cost a bomb.

The problem with magnum door steps, is they don't fit.

The curve at the bottom of the B Pillar doesn't follow the curve of the door

I need to replace the entire flitch on that side as well and maybe the scuttle corner so depending how far the rust has gone may need the panel that goes all the way up the A pillar! I will do a bit more investigating later in the week and see how far the rust goes.

Best to do that first before buying anything. Nothing worse than good my half cocked.

Check behind the top shock mount, you may be better going for full inner wings
