Hiya, I'm very interested in doing a 1293 supercharged engine for my mini. If you don't mind me asking, roughly how much is it going to cost you?

Hi Rebel87

To be honest its hard to give a final price of what I'm spending on the engine (I don't think I want to know), I 1st thought that I would just buy the kit, bolt it on and go BUT that changed once I started the strip down. I soon realised that I needed to do a lot of work to get the most out of the build. I think its going to cost me £2000 on top of the kit but this includes lots of tools, and other jobs I want to do whilst I'm there. If your seriously thinking about doing it one of the first things to do is get an idea of the state your engine is in.

Looks fantastic Torgo.

I've just finished installing one of Stuart's DCOE charger kits - staggering performance and looks excellent in the engine bay as you can see below.

Out of interest, what cylinder head work have you undertaken?

Hi Jpsmini

That looks amazing! I can only hope mine looks as tidy as that when I'm done.

Stuart did my head work to the following spec (taken from his website):

35.7 X 29 MM VALVES:

  18-23CC

SUITS POWER OUTPUTS TO 110 BHP AND SUPERCHARGER SPECS TO 140 BHP

I see you have kept a side mounted Rad, do you find this manages to keep the engine cool enough? if so what rad is it?

I would be interested to hear how you found the build and if you have any tips as well as an idea of what performance you are getting, PM me with any info you are willing to share.

Cheers

Ollie

Big box of toys arrived on Friday :) time to crack on with Eric's gearbox and Diff.

Following the excellent Guessworks rebuild guide I've now completed:

- Install of uprated Layshaft and bearing.

- Install of central oil pick up.

My only sticking point can when refitting the 3rd motion bearing retainer because ... following the Guessworks guide I found that the Shim that was originally fitted was no longer needed. After some thinking I decided to trust the Guessworks guide and continue without the shim.

Next up was the assembly of the X Pin Diff which was surprisingly simple:

Last job of the day was fitting water jacket plugs:

Hopefully the 2.7 final drive will arrive in the next couple of days, them I'm almost onto the engine build :) :)

Just to say Learner Driver a big thank you for your posts. Looks a fine job you are doing so well done.
I have a 1991 44k mileage Mainstream Carb Cooper. Last months Mini World article showed Simon Braddock with similar car to mine. He chose the Vmax SC route. I'm inspired by you both to commit and have a very good spare stage one tuned 1275 engine and box. I am going to strip the spare engine down and +20 rebore I think with a few recommended upgrades to pistons and usuall crank and bearing checks.
Are you planning ignition mods? A 123 programmable distributor is mentioned in the article. I know nothing about these yet apart from they are expensive. I plan 1:5 rockers and maybe upgrade the clutch and flywheel. Brake upgrades as well within reason as it's for road use only. Best wishes for your project completion. Following with interest.

And finally got the crank cleaned up and fitted! Its spinning smoothly and I got lucky first time with an end float of around 0.004" which seems to be acceptable according to the advice given in other areas of the forum.

After another unplanned long break, the build has started again. One thing I'm learning fast is building an engine for just 1 day each week makes progress much slower than I planned .........

Timing set up was the next:

- With all faces cleaned up I dry fitted all the timing gear to check they are level.

- I then counter sunk the 2 holes for the Duplex counter sunk screws.

- With all that done it was time for add gaskets and fit everything for real.

Duplex timing gear on and chain tensioner fitted, I'm going with Dot to Dot alignment here as I've been advised that be close enough:
