Hi I've got my engine out of the car and I'm wanting to mount it on a universal engine stand to allow me to paint it etc.
What's the best way to mount it , thanks Jim

I mounted mine at the pulley end, as my engine is automatic I have no oil filter bolt holes. The one's I used are also on the manual engine. I had a sealey stand with the 4x moveable bars.

To paint an engine it is sometimes easier just to put it on a bench as unless you mount it like the above picture the stand will end up in the way of your paintbrush or spray gun.

When you are building the engine up though - that is a different kettle of fish. The above photo wouldn't be ideal as the stand will be in the way of the timing gear and make it very difficult to get everything timed and fitted......for building it up fit a stand as mentioned by Swift_General suggests.

I found knocking up a custom plate helps mount to a stand and does away with the 'universal' arms and bolts.

I used a custom plate which bolted to the oil filter housing and the alternator mountings. Best place to put it, and it gives you plenty of access to the rest of the block.

I had a badly painted old door as my workbench at the time so using that wouldn't have been a great option. Love my engine stand!

As mr bounce but you need someone to sort an adapter to the universal plate

I bought mine as it was the easiest option at the time. The plate is welded to the metal cylinder which fits in the stand.
