Use a Cooper 'S' damper, or the replacement which Mini Spares sell. It damps out the crankshaft vibrations better. With a 1098 it is very worthwhile to have it dynamically balanced.

A better cam such as a Kent 26, MG Metro or an SW5 will improve it overall and give good torque, which is where the 1098 scores over a 998. As above, lighten the flywheel a bit but not too much.

Fit a higher FDR, I suggest a 3.2:1, and it will drive very well.

You will need an HS4 carb, or twin HS2's. Gas-flow the head a bit and use about 9.75:1 CR.

With a decent exhaust system you should be looking at c.60+ bhp at 5700 with a lot of torque at around 4000 to 5000 rpm and an engine which will pull strongly from around 2500 rpm.

It has been suggested to use a crankshaft damper.

Could I have more information on this damper please

Thanks

You shouldn't run any 1098 engine for any length of time without one.

Rhemac do really good dampers

Or you can use 12A367 so long as the bottom end is balanced and that works out a bit less expensive.

The purpose of the damper - as you may already know ? - is (in simple terms) to dampen and control natural vibrations in the crankshaft to save it from breaking. It's function is quite important and shouldn't be taken lightly nor brushed off.

For these reasons, I would express caution if considering a used one, though good useable ones can be found.

Beware if considering some of the re manufactured ones as some came apart (some of these have been recalled) and some have the wrong material in them and in doing so,are not tuned to the correct (vibration) frequencies that are needed on these engines.

Beware.

Thanks for the information!

Your knowledge is very much up there with the best of them!

Especially on the 1098cc stuff!

I built an 1098 out of an A+ 998 block with 1098 internals, bored +40, fitted http://www.swiftune....-camshaft.aspx, and a slightly flowed 12G202 head, full rc40 exhaust and twin 1.25 SU's.
Pulled like a school boy, cruzed the open roads with ease. Wonderful little driver. You could just drive, and it was fun.
