My 1968 cooper used to have a set of 3 spotlamps on the front, and apparently (not looked yet) the wiring is still there.
I want to get some classic chrome Lucas spots for the car (not sure how many), but was wondering what configuration to go with. For example, some spots have a clear lens and I assume these are for main beam, and some have a ribbed type lens, which I assume are fogs. Does anyone have any advice on what would look best whilst at the same time still be authentic to the period of the car?

It's all personal taste, I suppose. Just bear in mind that the italian-Job style 3 spot setup is not road legal, these days. You must have an even number of lights (2, 4, 6, 8 ...).

That's not true. It is legal.
The law says (and always has) that any auxiliary lamps have to be fitted equally to each side of the car, doesn't mention numbers at all.
If a lamp is on the center line it is equally on both sides of the car.
That is unless this has been changed VERY recently, in which case I apologise and will return to my cave.
(Also, because your car is a 68 it doesn't have to comply with current construction and use regs, rather 1968 construction and use regs)

A spot of fog lamp in the centre is Illegal, there is a minimun distance between the centres of the lamps.

Thanks guys for the input
I popped down to minispeed today and got myself 2 chrome spots plus brackets. Tried to fit them, but was short of a couple of washers and some wiring spade connectors, so hopefully will complete tomorrow.

That was the reason why road rally cars went from 4 lamps across the front to 2 up 2 down. and now RAC regs say they can only have 4 forward facing lamps including the head lights.
