Hi All,

I have recently undertaken a turbo conversion using a HIF44 carb (with a turbo kit rebuild) however I am having some difficulty getting it to run properly.

I have attached a photo to try and highlight the problem I am having.

Before the turbo was fitted I blocked the pipe that is circled on the carb (silly mistake) shown in the photo which prevented the car to start. After much frustration I realized my error took the blanking pipe off and happy days the engine started and ran like a dream first and every time.

Now the turbo is fitted, I have done much research and everywhere says this must be block to allow the pressure to building to then send back to the fuel reg etc. However, if I block it, the car has the same problem as above and refuses to start. Unblocked, the car starts (happy days again) however as soon as the boost builds up there a lack of fuel and the engine runs lean and stall until rev's/boost drops (not so happy days).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Is it a turbo carb. Looks different to mine. Can't see the part throttle lean off port.

No its a standard hif44 but I've been told fitting a turbo rebuild kit works?

I believe so, what's the easiest way to tell? I still don't know why that would stop it starting once the hole is blocked?

How are you pressurising the float chamber ?

Hi Phil,

Now this is all very new to me and therefore quite a learning curve so apologies for sounding stupid.

From your comment I have looked into this and I haven't done anything. I naively assumed hif44 + turbo kit and then it would be good to go. I now understand that the float chamber needs to be pressurised to enable the fuel to be fed without lots of pressure. or at least this is what I think the wonderful wide web and you are telling me.

Is there a simple solution for this?

very grateful in advance for your assistance, I know that you are extremely knowledgeable from my previous research and all the information you have posted online!!

regards

I take it your using a turbo fuel pressure regulator?

Yes, with an electronic fuel pump

Am I right in thinking the vent I have circled above should be linked to the plenum/feed to fuel pressure regulator to balance the pressure in the dash pot and float chamber? This would then allow the float to operate under boost and not just be forced down?

Put a "T" piece in the hose that goes from the reg to the plenum and run the extra leg to the pipe on your picture that's currently open to atmosphere. This should pressurise the float bowl.
