Last Year I purchased a VW Golf Mk2 GTI 5DR (1990) as a Project, Although it does currently run there is a few cosmetic issues that need to be addressed as well as a few electrical issues.

Oil Leak -

The first issue that was addressed was a Oil Leak, There was Oil residue on the head that indicated that the gasket or seals may have a issues. The head was removed and cleaned and re-sealed which resolved the oil leak issue.

Change of Wheels

The car came with some black 17" Alloys that were far too big and would rub on the arch when turning, and I very much hated them. I had a hunt around and found some adorable VW Wheels. They will require some new tyres but I'm very happy with them.

Looks like a good little project. I'm glad you got rid of the 17s they looked massive! My bro has a mk2 driver with a jetta front.

What are your plans for it?

Although the wheels would look lovely on another car, as they didn't fit they looked so stupid and it was very embarrassing going round a corner and the wheels rubbing on the arches 🙈.
It will be a a 2nd car, for weekend/evening drives and shows etc. I don't like having a Classic as a daily as its never treated right.

Your brothers car sounds lovely ☺️

Update on the MK2 Golf (Sep 2018)

My poor baby has been very much neglected over the last few years and only really managed to get working on it again this summer. The poor car developed several running issues that have been very difficult for me to work out over the years but I believe I am two parts away from finally getting him running again.

Firstly - Alternator issue. This car has had several batteries over the last few years that usually end up dying but about 2 years ago I finally worked out I have a faulty alternator. As this are expensive I will be getting the car running before I purchase another one.

Secondly, The evil immobiliser.

After insisting that this was half my issue right from the beginning I finally managed to work out that the ignition barrel was faulty and the immobiliser was causing issues with the second fuel pump (in tank). Due to the fact Electrics is my worst subject I may have put off removing the immobiliser for a good few weeks. The good news is that the Immobiliser has now been removed with no issues and that the ignition barrel issue will be resolved when I can afford to get the barrels made up (Have issues with locks on the car, these have been removed and is just a case of saving some pennies).

Thirdly.. Life sucks some times. This was about as far as I got this summer other than a few cosmetic fixes and I have now packed him away for the Winter while I concentrate on my NVQ2 Practice. Cambelt here I come

Always fancied another MK2 after having a few previously.

Regarding your alternator, have you looked into getting yours reconditioned? I had a 1970 Mercedes alternator reconditioned (brushes/bearings/rectifier) and cleaned up/sprayed for a fraction of the price I could've paid for a new one.

I haven't looked into it, I discussed it with my Grandad a while ago who informed me there should be a place in Westbury Trading Estate that might do it. However, I have found a decent guy who so far has been able to supply all my parts (second hand) So i expect I'll purchase one from him down the line. Unfortunately being a apprentice at 26 means I'm usually pretty poor O_O

Although silver is a much better conductor of electricity than a stainless watch strap and so is likely to get less red hot,  I hope that you disconnected the battery before working on your car while wearing your bracelet.

In regards to my Jewellery.. I've had many comments on it over the years as both my bracelet & ring are never taken off. However when working professionally (Within a garage) I will follow the rules set by the employer (i.e, Hair up, Jewellery removal etc.. ) The above was my first project within a private owned workshop.

Howdy,

For those who might be interested; My template website has now moved onto its live site & therefore has a new web address ‍:)

www.TheLittleDoris.co.uk

Unfortunately all my content is running off one website at the moment, and it’s full of my The Little Doris work rather than mechanical content :(

I’ll pop back & let you know when the mechanical content is uploaded :). In the meantime my profile will be dormant until I get a Mini of my own (Fingers crossed.. One day.. )

Thank you all for being so lovely while I’ve been here & good luck with all your Mini projects.

Ta Muchly, S Hope ‍:)
