Hi there,

As my Mini (MPI) is being rebuilt by now, I have this idea to replace my stock airbag steering wheel for a 13" MotoLita steering wheel.

Is this easy to do, and how?

Will disconnecting the airbag give any problems with the car's computer?

Looking forward to your help!

Thanks in advance!!! :)

Cheers,

It is possible and airbags have a service life that's almost certainly expired anyway. I notice you're in the Netherlands, so check local regulations allow it and that it won't affect your insurance.

The airbag steering wheel actually has the same fitting as MGF's, not earlier, bagless, Minis. I think we have a topic on doing it without setting the airbag off? Firing a spanner in to your face has little to be recommended!

When my mini came from Japan the airbag wheel had been replaced with a Nardi non airbag wheel. The car was also fitted with a packaged resister connected to the SRS module in the steering wheel. I guess this fools the ECU into thinking the airbag is in place. Will post a pic when I get back from holidays.

The airbag system is separate from the engine ECU (they share the diagnostic socket is all). If you are going to remove it (which I wouldn't personally) then disconnect the battery and leave for the internal capacitors to discharge (around 30 minutes).
The SRS will stay on unless you fool the ECU as mentioned above by putting the same resistance across the missing component ( the ECU does a check on powering up).

This was fitted to my car along with a Nardi non airbag wheel and connects to the steering column module... Nice to have the Nardi but am keeping my airbag wheel fitted.

To fitt the Steering wheel you need a airbag conversation boss. i got mine from wood and Picket.

With this kit you get the instructions how to change the steering wheel.

You can just remove the led for the airbag to turn off the warning signal.

Get the right aftermarket boss and it will have an integrated resistor to prevent the SRS system having a fit.

The Momo boss should be fine.

Is it really worth replacing? It seems an advantage to have an extra safety precaution such as an airbag. I would think of safety rather than style, but I appreciate it's each to their own.

If the airbag was standard don't forget to inform the insurance company you've removed it. If you don't and then make a claim you could encounter problems.
