Took my mini city for mot today and was told my twin exhaust is way too loud and has failed mot my question is is there anything I can do to reduce the noise without it costing me too much and if I did just replace it what would be the replacement and how easy a job would it be many thanks

Twin exit pipe exhausts are well known as 'power-sapping noise-boosters'.

Replace with an RC40 or Maniflow silencer box with a single final exit pipe and it will be a lot quieter and you will also gain a bit of power/torque and use a bit less petrol as well.

If it is a 1275 engine you need the twin box Maniflow or RC40, but a 998 can get away with a single RC40 or Maniflow back box.

Very easy to change the exhaust system.

How do they test if it's "to loud" for the MOT ?
As above a decent System will help with performance and IMO sound far better anyway.

Phil.

There are perhaps decibel limits etc but think the Mot man can use his discretion. To be fair I kinda agree if it's too loud. Cars can sound nice without being overly loud.

We built a pick with two peco twin outlet boxes at the rear.

The tester would not pass it. As it was just too loud.

Did not help that it was a 1071 race engine.

Why would adjusting the timing make it quieter?

Never tried them but you could experiment with a couple of the cheapy silencer inserts used on motorbikes just for the MOT

Some on ebay

Also the pipe running from exhaust tail end to engine reduces and is clamped together as seen in pics are the diameters pretty standard for the exhaust on exit from the engine going so far towards the tail end? And will I find this an easy job without welding many thanks
