"The HRCR is launching a new initiative for 2017 to run within the HRCR old Stager Asphalt Championship and alongside the current Mini Sport supported Mini Cup..

The Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup will be run as a class within the HRCR old Stager Championship aimed at encouraging young people into historic rallying. Whilst drivers must be under 25 years of age to be eligible to compete in the Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup there will be no age limit for co-drivers.

The Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup will be based on the Mini 1000 model with limited modifications conforming to MSA Historic Stage Rally Car regulations. A kit of parts will be provided by Mini Sport to ensure equality of performance at a competitive cost with the emphasis on safety and reliability rather than outright speed. Competitors will be able to use tyres of their own choice, however Mini Sport will continue to supply Yokohama tyres at very competitive prices which have proved to be very successful in the Mini Sport Mini Cup competition over the past two years.

To be eligible for the Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup, vehicles will need to be built using the basic Mini Sport supplied kit. Each car built will be given a unique identification plate confirming it as being built using the supplied kit. To ensure equality of performance all cars will be checked for power output and must meet a minimum weight limit.
The Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup is not just about competing on events. For those competitors new to rallying there will be opportunities to attend a workshop on car preparation and tuition on driving and co-driving skills. Whilst it is envisaged that the Junior Mini Cup will prove to be very competitive the HRCR are keen to promote comradery amongst competitors an important value that attracts competitors to the HRCR old Stager Championship.
It is envisaged that the Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup will run over 5 National B events all on UK mainland venues within the 2017 old Stager Championship. Like this year, the 2017 Championship will be run on sealed surfaces."

Full details of the kit, vehicle technical specification and Junior Mini Cup regulations will be announced in the autumn.

The HRCR are currently seeking expressions of interest from prospective competitors. If you would like to find out more or register your interest you can contact either Simon Malins from the HRCR on 07785 308165, Rob Eastwood at Mini Sport on 01282 778731 or by e-mail at [email protected]

Likewise, if only I was less than half my age ;-)

I suppose the only issues will be, finding a decent 1000 cc mini at a good price and the fact that it will still probably be cheaper to buy a 1000cc Micra and do similar, but more events.

I presume that once you reach 25 they are going to suggest you just change the engine to 1275+? Then it gets expensive!

It will be interesting to see what the Minisport kit consists of.

Maybe as well as a junior cup they should also do an "old guys" cup as well? The preparation kit would include a nodding dog for the back shelf........does anyone remember them?

Will be interesting to see the take up.

I was wondering if they are planning something similar.... Perhaps not the nodding dog, but a more regulated engine class within the minisport cup for us older brigade.

I'm building my car to enter it anyway, but would prefer to be playing on an equal playing field of similar tuned 1275 (ish) with standard type heads and twin su's or webers rather than trying to compete with the big power of a 7 or 8 port setup.

I agree. Tuning is the main issue. As in many areas of motorsport, the size of your wallet can have a significant impact. I think the hrcr should look at engine spec more than categorising by age where minis are concerned. You could then have classes by cc and head type.

I did make the mistake of mentioning this junior class to my son who is just learning to drive. His first question was "How much is a 1000cc mini?" Must say though that the more I think about it the more it appeals. :D

I think the 'kits' are being flogged by Minisport.....unsure of details yet.

But i do stand by my words.....such a superb idea.

Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup Technical Regulations now available.

https://www.hrcr.co....-now-available/

The winner of the Mini Sport Junior Mini Cup will receive the Mini Sport Junior Mini Trophy and a supported entry on a major UK Asphalt Rally in 2018.

The base for building a Junior Cup Mini is any 998cc Mini providing it has been registered before the 31.12.90 which is the cut-off date for historic category 4b vehicles. The car must be built using a mandatory safety preparation kit supplied by Mini Sport which includes a full bolt-in Safety Devices Roll Cage, Fire extinguishers, sump guard, front disc brake kit & master cut out switch. Depending on budget you can then purchase from Mini Sport various upgrade kits for the engine, transmission and suspension. Minilite Wheels and Yokohama control tyres are mandatory and must be purchased through Mini Sport.

The full technical specification and parts price list can be obtained either from Mini Sport or the HRCR using the contact details below. Competitors will need to join the HRCR before being able to order parts at the special discounts that Mini Sport are offering Junior Mini Cup competitors. This can be done online through the HRCR website or contacting the HRCR through [email protected]

For more information and a copy of the technical specification please contact either Simon Malins from the HRCR on 07785 308165, Rob Eastwood at Mini Sport on 01282 778731 or by e-mail to [email protected]
