Spark Plug 1 And 4 Is Black...

Best Answer harritz3257 , 10 April 2017 - 07:51 PM

Problem was a few things.

Bad spark plugs, lambda sensor and the headgasket had failed between cylinder 2 and 3..

Changed the gasket, plugs and sensor along with a new stage 3 head and it runs smooth again :)

Hello,

So lately my MPI's (1997) idle has started to sound weird.. Its like its misfiring..

My "Mini Tech Level" was quite low at this point, so i just replaced the spark plugs and thought the previous owner had not changed them..

2 months later and im having the same problem. Today i pulled the park plugs and here's the weird thing.. Cylinder 1 and 4 is all black, but cylinder 2 and 3 are the correct color.

Whats bugging me, is that the injector for cylinder 1 and 2 is the same, so how come the spark plugs aren't the same??

Hopefully im not the first one to have this problem.

Regards Michael

I know :)

I've borrowed a cleaning machine that cleans the intake (car needs to be turned on in idle for 2 hours, while the machine sprays something into the air intake).

Hopefully this will fix the problem..

Hi,

is your problem fix?

My mini MPI 1999 same problem

I changed the TDC Sensor and now it's good.

You can try to clean the sensor, (filing snap*, black dust*) this is free free !

Claude

It's above the starter on lhs (as you look under bonnet) with a blue connector.

sounds like it could be weak spark, check the leads, the spark plug gaps and the coil pack, check your valve clearances as well

Did you find a cure to your problem? Is it running rough or just on idle? I think I might have the same problem!

Sorry about the late reply.

Its still in storage, but i'll give it a look in a few weeks when the snow is gone.

Please do update the topic, if you find a solution.

My symptoms are rough idle and sometimes a cylinder isnt fyring as it should. When i get past 1500rpm I cant hear it..

Also my mechanic told me that i should have a look at the intake manifold, it could be filled with carbon.
