Meanwhile over at the bat cave..........................I sent over a box of bits ready to fit, but my mate must have been bored and went and fitted some of them.

So i finally got round to tackling the wiring loom (well the rear loom at least)

This is the spare loom i got as part of a job lot of parts from a late 80's mini it's in better nick than  first thought so decided to use this one.

Firstly i identified the connectors and loose wires using the Haynes manual.

Then i replaced the missing connectors where the previous owner had just cut the wires. I also added a couple of wires for power to the rear as i plan to put in some USB chargers and also mount the radio under the rear seat to keep the dash clutter free.

Then I removed all the old loom tape to inspect the wiring underneath and hide the additional wiring.

All was well so i re-wrapped it in good old cloth tape to maintain the mk1 look, even though most of it will be hidden

Next onto the front loom which might be a little more tricky.

And some more pictures from my mate

First the front brakes/drive shafts, luckily a liberal spray of WD40 before packing them away has kept the rust at bay, just need to get rid of it all before fitting the brake pads.

Next, fuel and brake lines

Also ordered up some new handbrake quadrants from ebay as I've lost the originals but i'm sending them back as they were utter crap, so that's another week to wait.

Just read through this, an interesting topic, reminds me a bit of my S  L  O  W rebuild on my ‘65 Riley Elf.

Whilst i wait for the mini to come back from my mates I decided to tackle the "signs" of corrosion on the Clubman estate.

Armed with my trusty screwdriver I started to prod the stonechip from the rear floor and as you'd expect it wasn't long until i'd created this...............................

God I love minis

Best fire up the welder and put the kettle on then...........................

One of my biggest regrets was chopping up a Riley elf shell that i'd bought for £1 off ebay.

At the time it was deemed too far gone, nowadays it'd be listed as just needing a little welding,

I did make a good profit on it though as i sold the roof for £10

That is an excellent profit!

I never gave much thought about owning a Mini, but when I saw my Elf on eBay, I thought this could be a good car. It was up for £1200 for a few days, then went to £1600 for a few more days, I bid and got it for  £3000.75p it looked very nice in the photos!

It was a non runner due to the clutch release bearing having exploded! I replaced the clutch & release bearing, the engine an A+ 1275 fired up and sounded nice.
I found a small hole at the bottom of the wheel arch into the sill. This grew & grew until a new floor needed to be fitted, more rust was found and replaced, this also necessitated a respray. The cost of the car has almost trebled!

what I do find a bit disappointing is that the Elf does not command more money than say a similar age & condition Mini.

I do like the Elf/Hornet. I always find I'm drawn to them at mini shows (remember those ??) and budgets rarely get kept to. those that manage it drive round in half finished cars. How long did it take you in the end ?? was it a rolling resto or a garage job ??

Think panel availability might be a contributing factor to the lower prices along with the Riley or Wolesley name that might have people confused, not realising the shared DNA.

Still, always on the lookout for a bargain booted mini
