Hi,
I have a 1982 998 HLE with a rounded Rocker Cover.
Could I fit an aluminium one with fins?

Seen a few S/H ones for sale and think they look nicer.

Thanks

I'll post some pics to show what I mean but I'm on my phone.

If standard. Yes.

S/H one of these on Facebook £20 posted but the Mini Spares listing talks about an issue with High Lift Rockers. I have (as far as I know) an unmodified 998 HLE Engine?

Just check how the fresh air enters the Rock Cover you have vs the Alloy one you are looking at.

Some of the Alloy covers are sealed, so the Crankcase Breather System won't work properly, other's I've seen just have a small hole through the Cap with no filter. IMO a filter of some sort, is a necessity here. There will also tend to leave an oil stain around the filler cap too.

Funny how this question arose today. I was lying in bed this morning dreaming of a transparent rocker cover and wondering what plastic to make it from. Moulding a sheet of acrylic over a former is not rocket science, but might be too brittle. Polycarbonate is not so easily moulded and might disintegrate on contact with certain organic substances which may exist in the oil vapour. And the head surface might reach about 120°C. So I gave up on that idea, but if a more suitable plastic exists I may revive it.

Meanwhile, I would suggest that if you find a nice rocker cover that you really like and it has the wrong breather, get a tubular stub and the internal baffle plate welded in. TIG is ideal but MIG will do, with ali wire and pure argon gas. Or Lumiweld and a gas torch. For appearances sake it may be better to weld on the inside. It will need a bit of polishing on the outside afterwards.

If it does not use a standard Mini cap there are other issues to deal with too.

It's this Rocker Cover here - it came off of a 998.

My favorite Alloy Cover.

That should be fine. The Cap is actually a Vented (and filtered) type.

Nice. So the basic properties of that one are that it has a vented cap to allow air to be sucked in, is ok on all standard A series engines, but, and a very big BUT, it only just fits, with some expert juggling about, if you have high lift rockers. I have to ask why they did not just make it a few mm higher, so everyone would be happy. People with a standard set of rockers would never even notice the extra height, or care.

Some of their amateurish designs are almost comical, if you think that having your car crack up is funny. I spotted one of their front subframe mount kits the other day, with better than usual poly teardrops, mediocre poly tower mounts, and toeboard mounts about as rigid as the Forth Bridge. Clearly hoping to sell lots of replacement toeboards, and possibly inner wings...

Frankly I find their products depressing. They may put in a lot of effort but fall very far short of the mark on some important detail every time. And I had better not mention floating primary gear bushes made of the wrong stuff entirely... Crankshaft sales will be rising.

But the rocker cover does look nice and will be ok if it fits your engine. I could almost want one myself.

They have been around since the 60's and were factory fitted to the MG Metro.

One of those clears my 1.5 rollers with silly amounts of lift  no problem.

All depends what 1.5's you have, my Titans cleared nothing (apart from the last MPi pressed cover) >_<
