hi, i have recently replaced my rear sub frame on my 83 mini. when i did this i noticed the heel board was going a bit. is it ok to weld pieces in to this or is this integral to the structure?

I have attached a pic of the damage but i haven't ground it back yet so i don't know the full extent.

any advice would be much appreciated

thanks

In a word knackered. That will require a new end section by the time that rust is ground back.

as above - cut it out , clean up & treat the rest

also check the reinforcing plates behind the sill at the back

sadly looks like you have a fair bit of work there

best of luck -- there are several project posts on here that can help you

I'm going to put an oil hole above the subby bolts , to stop this happening to mine

2 of my subby bolts were held in with silicone !

how easy would it have been to open up the area above the bolts to vent it a bit better

bl must have known it was a rot area , but I suppose the mini wasn't supposed to last as long as they have

how long was the design life of the mini ? - or wasn't it designed with that in mind ?

Not so much a case of needing more venting but more the application of a decent coat of paint and suitable water proofing after. As they never left the factory with a Waxoyl type process being applied you end up with issues like this. The design in the first place does not help either but it is what it is.
