The mini in the attached file is currently being repaired from a small impact. Due to its age and originality every effort is being made to make it period correct. There has been some discussion as to whether these grilles were ever chromed or simply painted from the factory, or that perhaps its the wrong grille altogether and has been put on at some point in the last 53 years.

Does anyone know for sure which grille it should be sporting?

Thanks

As far as I'm aware it's the correct grille that is made of one piece of steel it would have originally been chromed as a flat grille then pressed into shape after.has it received paint in the past ?

1959 Morris Grilles were painted.

Scroll down:-

Later Mk1 Morris pressed grilles were available chromed so both types were fitted during the life of the Mk1 but not sure what year changeover took place.....

My newly-acquired Morris super de luxe (1963) is correct except for a Cooper grille. I have the original, but it's quite corroded. From what I can find, the part is long-obsolete, so I'm wondering if anyone can advise me how to source one, or if a company who would re-plate the existing one at reasonable cost?
Thanks
Duncan

Hi
Just had a quote for re-plating the grille of £280, which seems a bit steep in comparison with a new, albeit incorrect, Cooper one of around £80-ish.

Has anybody any advice about this? I can't find anywhere selling the correct steel Morris one....

Thanks

New pressed steel grills have never been available as an after market product as far as I'm aware.

Rechroming is expensive but it's largely down to the labour it takes to polish the part between each stage of plating.

They never seem to go cheap on eBay these days but I've spotted a few at shows for £120 and bellow.

Thanks. I've been quoted £280 from Ashford Ltd, which is a good bit more than I'm comfortable with. I'm watching one on eBay, too, but it doesn't look any better than the one I've got. Funny there's a market for Austin grilles, but not Morris ones....

I shall have the same problem with my 1964 Morris 850 when I get a bit further along with the restoration.

An expensive re-chroming is probably the only answer if the car is to look 'mint' and original and thus have its optimum value and appearance.

One on eBay just now, but I think it's the same one as before, needs too much work.....
