Grp Mould , Any Body Know Any Good Companies?

Best Answer grizzler73 , 08 November 2016 - 09:09 PM

Thanks all, I am seriously considering doing it myself if the owner will give me permission, especially after talking to a couple of GRP companies about cost! I have done a lot of GRP work in my teens as my Father had a Racing Fairthorpe which needed a lot of work, and he rolled it at Brands one time!

I have to get the consent of the owner of the panel first but I am willing to give it a go, As Doc says any imperfections can be rectified. It is very low on my list, gotta get all the oily bits done first.

Hi Everyone

I have the potential option to borrow a earlier bonnet to get a mould made for my 71 GTM (the moulds do not exist for that type) and was wondering if anybody could recommend a good company to take the bonnet and repair/prepare it then make a mould?

Any help would be great!

Simon

Dynamic Mouldings, near Bristol, lots of experience with kit cars etc, made a new mould & redesigned the  bonnet for the Quantum 2+2's etc. Has done work for Wheeler Dealers TV show, workmanship is 1st. class, but not cheap as its a proper business.

See their website.

Thanks guys

I am just investigating the options at the moment, as there so few Cox GTM's around I don't think you would do it for financial gain!

I really want to get a earlier nose and they just don't come up for sale, so this might be my only option...

No suggestions, but sailing clubs and funfairs would be likely places to inquire. Working GRP isn't too hard and needs very little in the way of tools, have a go yourself?

As above, you can do it yourself easily, if you are happy with using GRP.

I did exactly the same with my Mini Marcos a good few few years ago.  You make a buck / mold by coating the panel you are copying with release agent then coating with fibreglass and resin (Gelcoat 1st), put a few sections of wood in it on the second or third layer to make it as strong as possible.

Then remove the original panel (that's when you see how good your release agent is!), and use the buck to make your panel.  Anything thats wrong with the buck you can fix with normal filler, smooth off and off you go ... I seem to remember some of the 90 degree turns were not perfect when I did the copy, so I just made them good with filler.

I had zero damage to the bonnet I copied - only issue I found was it was such a good copy it copied all the imperfections in the original panel ... hence the filler.

If it's a big or complex structure just put break lines in using cardboard cut to the shape and glass up the sides of these 90 degree returns, drill them so you can bolt it back together when its in bits before removing the bonnet you are copying.  If you look at how they build a car or boat with GRP you will see what I mean.

Simon, if you are considering having a go yourself then check out Neil/West's thread on the gtm owners forum. He made a mould of his front then remade it in carbon + kevlar
