My carb looked like this so removed it for a clean-up and service:

Polished aluminium protection / coating.

Cleaned up quite nicely and was then clear coated with acrylic single pack lacquer:

I left the carb dash pot on my desk and it has developed a rather festive sparkle.  Looks much worse in the flash picture:

I think the issue is in the lacquer.  Any suggestions for protecting aluminium?

I use a product called meguiars polish.

It's far finer than Solvol and protects and keeps a shine for a fair amount of time.

When I get a moment I'll go and take a pic of my motorbike which hasn't been polished in 4 years

Did you get all the polish off, prior to lacquering?, it could be a reaction to the silicon in the polish.

I did wonder if I should have used panel prep before spraying.  I didn’t; my final polishing was with T Cut so I assumed the metal would be ready for the lacquer coat.

I use wheel wax on the alloys- they're exposed to road crap for months at a time; worth a go?

I was concerned about lacquering the carb body and I could imagine wax would be better but difficult to apply.  Wax would probably work well for the dash pot but take a look at the claims and applications for ACF 50 http://www.acf-50.co.uk/acf-50.htm

I think I’ll give it a go with ACF 50.  If it doesn’t work there are plenty of other uses.  I’ll report back on how I get on.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed it really is great stuff !

I've had stuff blasted and left it months coated in ACF 50 and not any signs of rust !

ACF 50 appears to do the job quite nicely.  The carb has not been on the car yet but after a month or so in a draughty damp garage there are no signs of corrosion.
