No, because the Mini shell can not legally be used to build a new car. The Jag, not E type if I recall correctly, was a genuine new build.

Althiough quite how anyone would prove you were using an original, new or secondhand rear subframe or many of the other items on the DVLA check list is another matter however........carbon dating perhaps?

Some real world experiences of re-shelling a Mk1 and DVLA inspections here:-

The bug bear was that they had already declared 6 (?) more cars built than they had, so as long as they were built by Jaguar in a jaguar factory with jaguar parts their argument is that the builds were just delayed...a lot.

You are correct. I wonder if BMC/BL/Rover ever allocated numbers that were never built? That "should" allow Heritage to use them to build new cars of the correct spec for the relevant date. Might be difficult getting pre-A+ blocks etc brand new! And how would they get around the asbestos in the proper brake shoes, and similar problems? Indeed, how did Jag get around things like that?

Enquiring minds need to know!

Were the new Jags even road registered or just race cars?

I'm not sure, quite a lot of those old race cars had number plates anyway didn't they?

The Jags were mostly road registered.

British Motor Heritage to offer Mk1 Mini bodyshells

"British Motor Heritage is to build replacement bodyshells for Mk1 Minis. The first production run of 15 bodies will start in April with deliveries expected in May. The launch price is £9950, including VAT, and buyer’s will need to put down a 25% deposit.

The early body is different to its later counterparts. The major differences include smaller door aperture with different step profiles, sliding window doors with external hinges. Plus smaller rear window, rear side windows, and rear light mountings. The Mk1 also had different A-pillars and hinge reinforcements, different sills, front and rear parcel shelves. The bonnet, inner and front valances were also different – as was the numberplate mounting.

A prototype bodyshell was created last year and since then BMH has commissioned additional tooling to refine the finish and improve the build quality. A spokesman said, ‘BMH has used the later front bulkhead crossmember assembly as retooling for this non-visual part would have been prohibitive, and opted not to form the rotodip hole in the rear seat squab; recognising that a significant element of demand for the new shells will almost certainly be for historic motorsport.’

I must say the price is not reflected in the quality :proud:  Now I don't mean to gloat (well actually I do) but in Johannesburg the low rainfall, combined with an elevation more than a mile above sea level means that the dreaded rust bug stays at bay for longer. So that I have 3 Mk1 bodies completely rust free and in primer, never welded , ready for rebuild, as well as a panelvan body in the same condition. Although I have replaced a lot of floors in the past 2 years O_O

I know a guy who has a body jig and for well less than the almost £12k a heritage shell will cost he can do a full restoration on a Mk.1 shell to effectively 'as new' condition.

He was recently doing a Pick-Up body starting with a roof, front bulkhead, upper A-panels, upper B-panels, and a few other original bits. It looked superb when finished and the cost was around £5.5k finished in primer.

The floor looks like its three pieces welded together, ie left hand, right hand and tunnel. Is this how the new complete floor panels come?
