Hi everyone,

My 1996 Mini 1.3 SPI wouldn't start the other day and it seemed to be running extremely richt and today I found out the injector unit had turned into a fountain:

Anyone any idea how this is possible and even more important: how it can be fixed?

Kind regards,

- CC

I would check that that all the screws around the injector are tight. Other than that, it looks like you need a replacement, if not for the injector maybe the whole throttle body.

I've no idea what has happened to that - but looks like the injector has fallen apart / seal failed in a big way

must be loads of fuel in engine if you have been cranking it

I would think the cylinders are flooded + a lot of fuel in oil - so don't attempt to run it after repair without oil & filter change

also I would think exhaust is soaked as well , but no idea how you would remove it from the exhaust & cat

may be blow it thru for a few hours with an air line ?

That's the fuel pressure regulator leaking  (in front of the in injector).

Check the 4 bolts are snug. If they are, then undo them and inspect the regulator diaphragm material for rips. Careful when undoing the bolts so as not to lose the small spring or other bits down the back of the engine.

You could have your injector unit cleaned and repaired at relatively low cost and good quality at this.......

Won't helps sadly..it's not the injector, it's as Phil R has written above - it's the 1bar regulator built into the SPi body.
Check as Phil suggests failing that something is cracked.

This company doens not only clean the injector but also takes the whole unit for control. Where is the 1 bar regulator built in? Could not find any spare parts in the UK. Or....couldn´t it be an O-ring that failed?

The injector has o-ring  but the fuel appears to start pouring from the regulator not the injector, so this is unlikely to be the cause.

If the regulator's diaphragm needed replacing, one option might be to search ebay for 'Single Point Injection Unit' and find one that looks similar. Plenty of other cars used these Bosch units in the 90s, like this one....

... £30 isn't bad, but even so, I'd be tempted to make a low offer on this as there isn't exactly a huge demand for them. You should only swap the diaphragm and not the spring as other units could have different springs for different fuel pressures

While I don't like replacing failed parts with unknown used ones, there aren't many other options. If you can't a basic part like that new, then fingers crossed it has very little spares demand and a very low failure rate, so worth chancing a used one.

Sorry for bumping such an old thread but it seems that the flange has been tampered with and placed upside-down. That lip pointing upwards is actually what holds the 'top hat' down onto the rubber diaphragm.

Should look like this:
