1986 City E 998cc

1.5in SU

Engine chokes on any hard acceleration without the clutch engaged. It will eventually get to the higher revs but really doesn't like it as soon as you put the pedal to the floor.

It will crawl with the clutch engaged but as soon as the pedal is depressed too much it will choke and usually die if i persist.

I have replaced the Vac on the Dizzy as the previous one didn't hold pressure when sucking on it. Stole it off a new Dizzy, looked like a 45D. (Guessing a different type of vac wouldn't have fit my dizzy if it was the wrong type)

I have set the timing. 8 Degrees BTDC.

Mixture has been set using a colourtune. I also had a look on a emissions tester to double check.

Any suggestions to what i should do next?

I'm thinking a strip down of the carb see if i find any issues with that? Or a blown head gasket? (It's had a few of those..)

Cheers,

Adam

Have you checked the dash pot oil , ?

if it is too thin , the carb piston will rise too quick , giving a weak mixture

is the spring in the dash pot - had a mini a while back had spring missing - would idle - but not rev

is the problem improved with the choke out ?

any air leaks ?

piped correctly?

check for compression if you suspect head gasket

less likely -

crankshaft end float can cause stall when using clutch - look at crank pulley while someone depresses the clutch pedal

My thought would be the dizzy vac advance being the wrong curve(if changed as a complete unit)??

while looking at the dizzi as above -

check the rotor arm moves & returns back to original position

have had a few in the past with seized outer shaft

suck on vacuum pipe , check base plate moves & returns - link may not be connected correctly

best of luck

Was it ever running well, or have you just done some work to it?

Thanks to all that replied, still don't really know what the issue was.. did the tappets (they weren't massively out), and let it run out of fuel, refueled it and it was fine! Could have been stale fuel.
