Hi;

I have started making a Centre Console using plans from around the web.

Quick questions:

Are the cut outs on the sides supposed to fit under the Heater Matrix or do the sides of the console slide over the heater matrix to enclose it and the cut outs are for the hoses etc?

To get the console in place does it slide over the Gear Stick?

Yes to all your questions...

It does enclose the heater box but leaves room for the windscreen hoses to exit and go to where they are supposed to...

I will be redisgning mine after Christmas because it doesn't let any hot air into the cabin like its supposed to, also the drivers side will also have a cut-out for my big feet to fit without catching the side of the console itself...

It does slip over the gear stick as you say, but it depends which plans you are using...

I knocked one up earlier this month, I didn't follow any online instructions though. Just kinda designed it as I went along, made it from cardboard at first, cutting bits off and adding bits then made a first go out of ply then made a second one changing the mistakes I made on the first one. I made it to suit myself. Guess what I'm trying to say is make it to suit yourself and what you want it to do, if you do it like this then you'll end up with something you want and like!

Started yesterday and finished the basic build today. It is held together with some worktop screw fittings. The individual pieces were test fitted to try and work out were they sit relative to each other but screwing it together has been a bit of a guess so not sure if its going to fit.

On the plans it doesn't really show you where the two centre pieces fit so these were a guestimate with some measuring and looking at photos of consoles :-)

I was going to try and build it in the car but there is no way to get at the screws. I also tried to fit it in the car but it looks like the seats need to come out :-(

I was going to cover it in Vinyl but there may be too many corner edges so I may just paint it? Not sure what to use as edging either?

Also I messed up the R/H side (when sitting in the car). The cut out for the Heater is too low. I may redo that side but I may need to chop a load off to give access to the clutch?

I guess with the seats out the console should slide in place?

You can still cover it in vinyl still and just put edging trim on the edges (that's how the off the shelf one's are done).

Looks good! I also made my own. The only way I could fit it was to assemble it on the car.

Nice one :-)

What did you use for the edging?

Thanks! It was just some universal rubber edging trim, you can find loads of it on ebay. I think I got mine from a trader at a Mini show a few years ago.

How and where is the console attached in the car?

They are not really fixed anywhere they just sit on the floor and against the toe plate and wedge around the Heater Matrix.
