the MSA material requirments are quite clear.

1.4.1. Specifications of the tubes used:

Minimum Material

Cold Drawn Seamless Unalloyed Carbon Steel,

containing a maximum of 0.3% of carbon.

Note: For an unalloyed carbon steel the maximum

content of additives is 1.7% for manganese and 0.6%

for other elements.

Minimum Yield Strength

350 N/mm2

Minimum Dimensions (Ø in mm)

a) Mandatory tubular members

45 x 2.5 (1.75” x 0.095”) or 50 x 2.0 (2.0” x 0.083”).

38 x 2.5 (1.5” x 0.095”) or 40 x 2.0 (1.6” x 0.083”).

(For roll cages/bars approved prior to 1.1.95).

b)Optional tubular members

38 x 2.5 (1.5” x 0.095”) or 40 x 2.0 (1.6” x 0.083”).

1.4.2. In selecting the steel, attention must be paid to

obtaining good elongation properties and adequate

weldability.

1.4.3. The tubing must be bent by a cold working

process and the centreline bend radius must be at

least three times the tube diameter. If the tubing is

ovalised during bending, the ratio of minor to major

diameter must be 0.9 or greater.

note that is what they require to be the MINIMUM.

That is all well and good written down in MSA towers......but how can a scrute measure the yield strength or composition of the cage you've just shelled out for?  They can't. Yes they can measure the diameter and yes they can measure the thickness with inspection holes, but the others they cannot.

Roll cage manufacturers have an agreement with the MSA and FIA to meet their requirements and they are subject to technical audits and inspections. That way the manufacturing companies can issue conformity certificates which the scrutineers accept without reservation. Only the method of installation is checked & inspected. Now, whether there is some 'fiddling' who knows?

It would seem unlikely that well-known manufacturers like Safety Devices would ever fiddle anything. They were a very ethical company when my old friend Tony owned the company, but he passed away 10 years ago and it was sold. I would still only ever fit an SD cage though.

From what i can see when looking into and speaking to him it seems that the custom cages one is the base of a couple of them and then built upon as there are extra bars here and there in them

That sounds like a plausible explanation for all the 'extra' tubes you can spec on the CC website.  Reckon Endaf thought there needed to be this or that here or there and hey presto it appears on the CC website.

If you actually look into some of the cages which endaf has built recently you will see that there are extra bars which have been added which are not the optional extras on the custom cages. I am not denying the fact that his cages are of a custom cage base as he is one of the suppliers and fitters for custom cages.

The only reason i mentioned him was because i have spent some time looking into cages recently for my project and he is the only cage fitter which i can suits a build i am doing
This is just my two cents to this thread.
