I think the manual specifies .003" end float, but from what I've been told you need a little bit more, like .004 to .006".

E.g.

I'm sure I didn't have mess about like this last time I built an engine. I've asked the question in the tech section. So hopefully I'll get there.
On a more positive note I had a deliver from the US today, which was a lot quicker than I thought. Will have to definitely get rid of the old seats asap.

How do you get to 004 ? Buy a different thickness, sand them down or what?

I ended up using the old thrusts on one side and a new over sized set on the other as two new ones wouldn't go in. Still had to take a couple of thou off by rubbing the back of the thrust on emery placed on a flat surface - you tend to loose the skin off your finger tips too :shy:  I measured the thickness first,  decided how much to take off and rubbed them down, measuring with a micrometer regularly so the thickness was reduced evenly across the area of the thrusts.

That's what I've been doing. Guess I'll have to do it a bit more.:-)

I placed fine emery on glass to make sure it was flat.

Probably should have waited being I've got to cut a load of holes in it for the dials!

You'll end up painting it matte black anyway, because of the reflection of you're grin when you drive it :D

Fosters, that reminds me I need a beer :highfive:

I will be painting it but it won't be black. I'll give you a clue, it rhymes with 'and' and starts with 's'

And the compartment where the wiper motor is looks like an ideal place for a pack. Now where can we put the wiper motor

Finally started to carry on with the engine build and its really getting on my nerves! Eventually sorted the main bearings and thrusts. But the big ends are playing up.

With 2 of my conrods, when I torque the nuts they are rock solid on the crank! And yes they are the right way round and clean. Tried the bearings on one of the other conrods on the same part of the crank and they were fine. So I'm at a bit of a loss.

Even tried it without the piston in the bore just in case the rings were a bit tight.

I don't understand what on the conrod could be causing it. I have no previous knowledge on the history of the engine, if it was running ok or not.
