The R & D of something untried !

Isn't that the Truth!

Just looking at your trailing arms, they appear to be Mini types with an extension - is that what they are?

Yep standard arms with a fat plate welded on the back. Must be an AMC thing for 13" wheels.
The shocks I bought were the kyb extended ones from mini spares, but not sure how far they extend.

Well in all the confusion (in my head) I have realised that I retained the original rear shocks, I'm going to order in some longer KGB's unless anyone objects. I've bought so much stuff from minispares I forget what I have bought and what I haven't.
Here's a few piccies. One for spider on the rear of the arm (fyi on mine it's even bigger! The distance between the grease nipple and the wheel hub is 14"!)

Had to drill through the cone mount on the chassis to get the cone compressor in.

One of my aims is to rough up the look and I've had a failed attempt to patina/rust up things. Have ordered some other stuff. It's a right pain in the arse to rust up galvanised body panels.

Had to extend my storage to accommodate the compressor. And a 200amp cutoff switch.Attached File  20190522_195745_resized.jpg   30.9K   4 downloadsAttached File  20190522_195617_resized.jpg   34.2K   3 downloads

You're a Machine !!  - no two ways about that !!

Cheers for the pics of the Trailing arm.

This may present a bit of a quandary here ??

While the Moke Trailing Arms are longer than Mini ones, the Shock Mount is actually still in the same location as a Mini;-

(the Shock stud being removed here)

This, being closer to the Pivot Point, together with the longer shock just more movement than the Scamp arrangement.

I wonder if you could drill the original back of the stub axles and fit a bolt in there for the shocker ? It would also likely need relocating the top mount too  but it would give quite a bit more movement.

done that. but I would buy new and then throw them in a lathe then swap out. also consider changing the bolt size.

OR make up a bracket bolting onto the back plate 3 fixings onto which the shock could be mounted. this could be above or below current location depending on required ride height. Midas cars did similar to lower the ride height.

On a standard radius arm is the shock bolt screwed in or does it bolt all the way through for the bearings to sit on? Looking on mine in the picture the original mount is still there but just shorter with a single nut on it. I could utilise that, its only 55mm back I wonder if that would be enough. I could put a new top mount in 55mm back.

Not having much luck sourcing moke rear shocks. Minispares or mParts don't have them. So if anyone knows where I can get some please let me know.

Actually scratch that. Can't move it back, the shock would't fit between the body. The current mount is more set back than the original one.

The standard Mini shocker mounting is an integral part of the stub axle. Not that it sounds like it helps to know. Hard to believe something suitable doesn't exist, it's only a telescopic damper afterall. Perhaps Protech are worth a call?

One thing I don't get, when companies quote the open and closed lengths, they say from pin centres. But there is no pin centre on the top of the rear shock, So where do they measure it from? The point where the shock passed through the bodywork to the bottom pin centre (in between the 2 rubbers)?

Dunno, but I'd like to think it's the same for both measurements so at least you know the stroke.

https://www.calverst...damper-lengths/   - He says fixing centre, which at least suggests between the bushes.

The Bilstein's on that chart look perfect and with the right length stroke, just need to find them now.

I've started an Instagram account dedicated to the desert rat so I can easily add video and pictures. Will of course be still updating on here too. Instagram- the_supercharged_desert_rat
