Not having much success crackle painting my rocker cover. Any tips or advice graciously received. Sprayed onto bare metal. Garage temp was 17 deg c. In the intstructions it says between 16-35 deg c. Don't know why its smooth on the side and glossy!

you don't need high temp paint. I would say it is just poor paint.

I find the VHT Brand good quality. I'd say the temp is too low and maybe the humidity too high. Only a guess.

Are you really sure you'd like a Black Crackle finish ? I know they look good, but keeping them looking that way and clean is next to impossible.

i found it does need to go on quite thick - and baking in the oven really helps develop the crinkles (..it stinks though..)

Don't mind not keeping it clean.

The other option is a heat gun or hair drier to get both the part and paint warm before painting. You do three coats at different angles and then warm it after, especially on the sections that haven’t crinkled yet.

What, spray over the existing stuff?

As said above, it needs more heat, spray over in one direction get the heat gun on it, another coat in the opposite direction and go over it with a heat gun, and then another coat diagonally and go over with the heat gun. you'll see it wrinkling up, but don't get it to hot or it will bubble. or if you have little oil heater cover it in foil so it doesn't get covered in paint put the rocker cover on and spray it on that, that's what I did with mine.

Don't put it in the oven, even if the wife is out. she'll be able to smell it for days afterwards, don't even take it in the house :lol:rot13nX.jpg

You’ll probably have to strip it back and start again

Here’s a good guide, it shows the three angles to spray from when painting. Same as what’s written on the label

You NEED a heat gun for this. I tried several times to use an oven or a hair drier. But the bullet and bought a cheap hot air gun, did heavy coats, dried each one with the gun.
