I'll soon be sending my shell off to have all the crusty panels replaced...before I do am I best to remove the e coat (all heritage stuff) and spray with primer (bilt electrox am planning on using) also should I worry about damp behind the primer? Heat/dry the panels with heat gun? What's the advice?

I sand the Heritage coating back even though it's a good coating. It's more to do with checking for spider tracks of rust. Then I epoxy primer.

Epoxy is water resistant anyway but do spray in warm dry conditions.

Thanks , what sort of grit flap discs do you use to remove the e coat? Garage is heated and de humidified but will warm panels before priming also?

I wouldn't recommend using flap discs to remove all the e coating from panels. The small contact patch could well put waves into the surface and result in more labour come bodywork time.

You would bet better off using a 40 grit disc on a 150MM DA sander and use a soft pad if you're doing wings.
Make sure you wear a mask as well as you'll be making a lot of fine dust.

As per Tupers post, DA sander is what I use.

I'm assuming with a 40 grit pad this e coat comes off very easily?

+1 for DA sander but 40grit discs??? you will need a fair bit of HiBuild primmer to fill

swirl marks from that , I would only use 40 grit for knocking back filler! if it was put on

with a trowel.

The discs I use are 180. You still get some swirl marks but then if you flat between coats of primer, then top coat you should be ok. Some high build primer could be used if you are really fussy. Obviously if it's outside then a lot more work would be needed but inside of panels like door skins quarter panels etc then just basic prep.

Use on a medium speed, but don't let the pad spin its meant to oscillate,

Use a Desautor Auto random orbital with dust extraction very nice and

smooth to use, quite pricey but have had and used it for a lot of years.

As Sonik says P180 for ecoat

Leave it on E-coat is the best prime you can get, give it a quick key up then epoxy over it all

Nope, i have to disagree here. I have had Heritage panels with spider tracks of rust on them and the only real way to see these is to sand the coating back.

And is it actually E-coat??

Can't comment on that never seen it myself.. anything I've seen if theirs was the proper e-coat it may not be now as I know they ditched it on the full shell (didn't drop the price though)
