i am sure there is a reason for this, but after googling around I cannot find it.

Basically (picking up on a discussion os Swedish forum) when we order from Minispares we are charged the 25% Swedish VAT rate instead of the 20% Uk rate.

Seems the same issue for for other EU customers.

I buy lots of stuff from the Uk but MS are the only retailer to not charge the UK VAT rate.

Anyone know why?

Not sure if that was relevent or not.

Why don't the 100s of other UK webstiores I use charge the Swedish VAT rate?

Do you have to pay the Swedish tax on it before it gets to you or does it come straight over? Some sites offer the option to pay tax at source so that there's less hassle for the buyer.

I used to buy lots of R/C gear from the USA and every package was held at customs until I'd paid the UK tax on it and it could be sent on. Charging the destination country tax at source would mean the items would come directly to you and you wouldn't have to wait for a letter informing you of how much tax you owed on it.

Basically MiniSpares have finally realised they should be complying with the rules. And should apply the VAT at the rate of where the goods are yo be delivered/ordered.

It has been like this for many years but few places actually did the cross Europe sales correctly.

It has improved for us here are we have 19%.

That is import tax.

They should.

Most can not be bothered. But if they get caught out.

Just went through various webshops I use (auto related and other)

They all state the price including VAT, so they must absorbed the extra 5% VAT themselves.

Minispares as we know state the price without VAT

It's to do with value, because we export a large amount we have to charge the vat rate in the destination country. As Nick says others should be doing it too depending on the value they export.

That's just a proposal at the moment, not the reason for this.  At the moment there is a turnover limit in each EU country, once you go over that limit you stop treating the sales as being where you are and start treating them where the customer is, so the local VAT rate applies.

I don't think it's the case that businesses routinely get this wrong, just that most, especially suppliers of small low priced goods, don't export all that much and often when they do they will setup a brand, including physical presence in that country anyway, so the supplies are already being made in that country at that country's VAT rate.

Yep as I said above it's value, that figure is a lot lower than you think and a lot of companies are still doing it incorrectly.
