Hi all,

Whilst i know that welding is 90% technique, is the argon shield gas that much better than co2? For comparison i've found a supplier that'll do a full co2 bottle for £40 and £8 refill (though i'll also need a co2 reg at around £20) vs. argo bottle and reg @ £85 plus £10 refill.

Is the argo that much better?

It mainly comes down to cost, if you can afford the Argon then go for that.

I've used both, but not at the same time to show a comparison and with different welders. I'd say the argon does give a better weld.

Worth having a read;

Cheers.

There are different mixes of Argonshield ... well BOC offer different mixes....see this

£10 refill is very cheap ... I pay £34 for Argonshield light from BOC plus the rental charge which is £4 a month for the bottle.

To answer your 1st question, yes I found Argonshield better to use ...maybe not any easier but in my mind it gives a superior weld.

Having used both, I wouldn't go back to Co2, you get a more stable arc and better penetration with Argon Shield (I use Argon Shield Light from BOC)especially on thin steel which is what we tend to be welding on Minis. Co2 might be ok on thicker stuff. When you look at the cost of replacement panels and all the time involved, is it really worth trying to save a few quid on gas?

I used to use CO2 all the time and very good results with it.

However i'm using Argoshield light now but unfortunately never done a back to back comparison to prove which is better.
