Hi, regarding detailing parts on the 1275 engine I am rebuilding for my mini. Is powder coating stronger/better than a can spray finish on parts like brackets etc around the engine and engine bay. Does powder coating stand up to heat ok ( I known that it's baked on ) also could the flywheel housing be powder coated? Does the extra thickness pose a problem over a spray painted finish.

Powder coating will provide better durability against oil and grease over time. It's good with heat, but NOT manifolds. The flywheel housing can be powder coated, however make sure the mating surfaces are not coated, you'll need them to have them flat to allow for the tolerances in the build. Personally I spray things like the engine, flywheel housing, wok and gearbox case.

I would be seriously concerned about overheating oil if the gearbox was powder coated, and possibly similar problems with the clutch.

Wouldn't create much of a thermal barrier, if any. It's the whole powdercoating an intercooler debate all over again. It was proven it didn't make any difference due to the thickness involved.

Whichever you choose, make sure that the prep is spot on or neither will last well

Both are fine all down to prep
I have gearbox cases powder costed and etc make sure whoever is doing it actual know what there doing e.g. Don't want where the gaskets powder coated and etc and take time to mask it up even down to putting bungs in the threads

If you want to coat your manifold them you'll need to do this

http://www.zircotec.com

Expensive but will reduce heat transfer into the cabin.

I have booked my one (ceramic coating) through this guys: Fast Fox.

(They work both with Performance 1 Coatings and Zircotec, and they offered a cheaper price with Free Collection/Delivery!!!!)
