well just over 2 years after a full resto/paint stc (and £4k) I have just noticed the drivers door bottom has started to come away from the skin - there has obviously been water ingress over time and as the company didn't put the drains holes under the door back ,which I never noticed till recently,it has caused this problem.....

So - I will obviously be on the phone in the morning but in the meantime is it better/cheaper to replace the doors completely or get the bottoms cut away and replaced?

The rest of the car looks very good still so I am hoping its "one of those things"

The car is used daily so need this doing quick as well as properly

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Lenny

As car is used daily, I would purchase another used door and repair and reskin that, paint the inside of it, then fit and have outside painted including blending into adjacent panels.
Maybe if you are paying someone else to repair the doors it may be cheaper to purchase new.

Best off drilling some holes (standard doors have 3) to let the water out that finds its way past the door window weather strips. Replace if they are old or have gaps between them and the glass. Then have your current doors if they are the original and fit ok (no two minis doors are ever the same) repaired and re-skinned.

after re-skinning / painting , flood the area with waxoil

I usually block the drains & spray inside the skin , to get the waxoil into the skin joint

It may pay to warm the door when doing this , as the waxoil creeps into any voids easier

after it has dried / cured , remove bungs from drains & make sure they are clear

have heard of extra drains in the doors as well , for added ventilation

I'd personally say re-skin the doors you have as mentioned above no two mini doors are the same and a lot of them take extra work to get the gaps right so if you're paying someone else to do that it's going to cost more money

Plus you'll know what you're starting with

Thanks all seems like a resin job as the doors themselves are ok

What do you think cost would be roughly for the work?
Re skin and paint both doors?
I will check tomorrow but some idea would be appreciated

Thanks
Lenny

I think the traders ask upwards of £150 for a re-skin - then you have prep and paint.

In reality it takes about 2 to 3 hours to re-skin a door ... so the cost above seem reasonable.

Maybe do a Google and you will find at least two companies offering the service, I know 100% one of them will not paint the door ... not 100% sure about the other one.

I'd buy another door, offer it up and reskin it over a weekend,

then put the current door back on,

then sort the gaps another weekend (weld filler rods, etc)

put original door back on,

prep / paint new door (DIY or outsource),

swap the new door in. Might take a while but it would be worth it, and not too costly?

Swapping doors usually ends up as a bag of nightmares.  You're better off using your existing doors

All well and good proving the hinge nuts don't snap on removable or from repeated tightening. And that you can get the pozi or star bolts lose to remove the hinges from the old door.

You can fix the hinge bolts with new studs once the door is off. If it's going to be reskinned the poxi nuts will come loose with a good application of Wd overnight and a blow torch to free them off.. It's easy to do from inside the door after the skins come off.
