I have a Mini Cooper Sports Pack that I'm about to start rebuilding the 2nd time round.

I bought it of its first owner in 2004 and was my daily until 2008 when it spectacularly failed it's MOT due to corrosion.

The first rebuild was a full nut and bolt restoration with the body chemically striped and restored, new gearbox and a repaint in MG biomorphic green.

It was then my daily again doing nearly 35000 miles from September 2008 to August 2010 when I fell asleep driving home from a night shift.
I hit a traffic light head on at about 30mph writing the shell off.

Ive been collecting parts for the past couple of years and finally I have the time and money to rebuild but sadly not with the original body. I pick a heritage shell up on Saturday.

The plan is to rebuild it back to original as new spec and have it painted in its original volcano orange.

After the accident

It's a credit to build you walked away from it.

It looked after me quite well walked away with just a graze.

I've got pictures of the damage but only on the pc I'll post some next time I'm on.

Good god you were lucky to walk away from that! Interested to see how you tackle the imperfections in the new shell!

Got the new shell home this afternoon and my first impression of it is quite good. There's a few sharp edges and heavy handed spot welds I've noticed but panel alignment seems to be as good as Rovers.

I begin preparing it for paint tomorrow so maybe my opinion will change when I've spent a day with it. But so far so good.

I spent yesterday working on the shell and over all I'm pleased with the quality.

So far the only areas that have required attention is the bare metal under the door/boot hinges & seam strips. Also the lower strip between the rear arch and verticle seam was welded on with bare metal beneath why would the do this?.

Heritage should also really start painting them before fitting up as there was corrosion behind the nearside hinge on the back panel.

The fit of the rear valance isn't as good as I'd like either but I'll live with it.

Going to get some stone chip on it this afternoon then it's ready for its trip to the body shop on Saturday.

What about all the places you can't see, between the sills etc, box sections, bare metal or painted ?

Very envious of the new shell. What are you planning to use for rustproofing in the sill's, box sections etc?

It's a shame the heritage shells aren't better than they are. I'm restoring my MPI at the mo and it was clearly dipped in primer at the factory as there are no bare parts in the box sections...
