If just got my car back from a respray and its covered in a fine white dust. i really want to give her a really good wash but he has said not to use anything with sillicone in because it will react with the paint.

What should i use to wash her?

I've got some autoglym bodywork shampoo and conditioner can i use this?

He suggested i use T-cut as that is what he used on her but i'm sure i read somewhere that you shouldn't use t-cut on brand new paint. and i'm pretty sure she was only painted on thursday.

oooo confused :'( Please help.

many thanks
Lucy

well.... actually,.... if you got it 'proffessionally' resprayed, it's their fault and you are able to take it back to them and get them to polish it up. It is their incompitence that has led your paint finish to be less than satisfying. I personally would not have sent it out to you in the condition it's in.

sound to me like they've sprayed the car,... and then put it close by to some other cars that are being prepped, the paintis not fully cured yet so all the little bits of dust and filler have attracted the new paint, and sank in to it.. the paint has then hardened... leaving the tiny specs ingrained.

I would not use T-cut as it contains ammonia which is not very nice for paint. you should be safe using a proper buffing compund like G10 (made by a company called farecla i think) the buffing compund is used on a damp cloth and massaged gently into the paintowrk, ait will remove a microscopic layer of paint, and hopefully the speckles with it..., you can get different grades ofthis compund, 1 is rough and 10 is very fine.

You can also buy Halford own brand version.

I would use the buffing compund... then polish it up (use a poilish that doens't have wax in it. then leave the car for a week, and then you can clean, polish, and then wax it.

The reason for this is because 'waxing' the car will stop the paint fully curing as it stops the solvents escaping from the paint properly.

Pm CooperShaz.... They run a bodyshop and are the paint gurus here lol!

**EDIT* just a thought.... if the dust is loose, just hose it down with cold water and DONT use T-cut. lol.

The dust is lose, sorry if i didn't explain to well :errr:

I jut want to give her a nice clean and make her shiney :- but wasn't sure if i was able to use my autoglym.

And no i'm not happy with him at all :'( my 'professional' repsray looks ok but i asked him to fit some parts for me such as some chrome arches and the side piece under the passenger door is already falling off. i only got it back an hour ago :'(

I'm just scrubbing up her inside before i start the outside. I think shes been t-cutted. its just white dust left on her.

What paint will he have used? she wasn't baked.

it sounds like its been sprayed with celly paint and its been buffed or rubbed with t cut leaving a white dust on it, it just needs a good wash with water.

dont polish or wax it for about a month.

this is my opinion and will differ from others.

Grasstracking? lol thats a new one to me i'm afraid.

And yes am i fuming with them. I think my spray job is very poor but i don't know how to complain about it :'(

When the light catches certain areas you can see where rust was removed with a grinder and left sweeping marks. I thought if the car was primed well then you shouldn't be able to see these marks. grrrrrr.

ok, well it sounds like they didn't prep the surface well before they primed it if you have patchy sections. and scratches showing through.

I know it's rude to ask, but how much did you pay for the respray, the more expensive, the bigger the argument you have lol!

You are within full rights to take it back to them and complain, possibly even ask for another respray or at least the dodgy sections resprayed again.

Unfortunatly you really do have to confront them about it, just call them up and say you're not happy with it for whatever reason, and wish for them to take a look at the car with you so you can point out the areas.

Also mention the parts you asked for them to fit which they didn't.

Make sure they know you're realllllly not happy and pester them! don't give in.

I paid £1250 for a black respray and for arches and bumpers to be fitted. That also should have included a service because she was piddling out oil everywhere we went like an excited puppy lol!

He forgot the service even though i reminded him twice AND he had it written down. So it got done while we were on the way to pick her up. and now shes piddling even more oil :-

She looks nicer than she did, but not quite as nice as i had hoped lol. We are going to take her to another garage to sort out the leak and ask their advice on the paintwork, whether they think its been done properly.

Thank you for all your replies Retro, love your clubman by the way!!! Its as shiney as new penny! And a great colour too.

Aww thanks! :-* that car is my pride and joy :errr:

I hate to bring downers to threads but for £1250 you shouldn't have to be worrying about anything, that is a fair old whack, for that kind of money I'd expect a finish that after a bit of home polishing and detailing could be entered for concourse competitions.

I'd recommend talking to them about what exactly They did.
Talking to the other garage, but expect them to say it's poor, Garage businesses are generally 'dog eat dog' about other peoples work.

With regards to the service.... where is the leak coming from?? Two things have happened to me in the past before I learned to work on my own car.

1.) They do not replace the Sump Copper washer, Strip the Sump nut thread, and rather than tell you, they just Nip the nut up so that it looks like it's done up but is pissing oil out!

2.)Refill the car with Stupid oil like 10w40, which is thinner than 20w50 (recommended oil for minis due to gearbox sharing the oil) So the thinner oil will either make a leak worse, or start a leak as it can seep through better. only cure was for me to enitrely flush the system and refill with good 20w50.

Keep this thread posted Lucifer... I Hope this gets all cleared up for you!

Like retro10s said, for that money, you should expect a real top quality job. To still be able to see grinder marks is shocking, they should have at least given it a quick skim of filler. I would make a list of all the points you are unhappy with, list all the blemishes you can find. then go talk to them and ask for it to be put right, free of charge. If you can't get that out of them, threaten them with trading standards.

can u tell us who did the job for us so we dont go there? lol

That white stuff is normal when you first paint it with cellulose, i would clean it with water and polish it (with a good polisher, and make sure its wet! if not it over heats the polish and its a paint taking it off)
then just wax it and that will protect the paint.

sounds like they just did half the job.. i wonder if they bothered with a good primer... :dontgetit:

Tis a sad day lol!

Came out of work at lunch to find a good 2 foot squarish patch of oil under the car, i think it had mingled with yesterdays oil too though :dontgetit:

So now i'm at odds really do i wait a few weeks and give the car a really really good shampoo and polish and see the paintwork then? Then complain if it still looks shoddy and reguarding the leak should i ring the orginal guy and ask him to fix it for nothing as that what i had asked or take it somewhere else, he told us that he thought it was the sump plug that was leaking and that the threads had been striped off so he couldn't tighten it to much? So we would need a new plug.

We took it elsewhere to ask there advice and they said that the leak mite involve taking the whole engine out :'(
But i'm afriad i don't know enough about it to know wether the advice i'v e been given is sound.

Option one: Ring and ask original guy to take care of leak who thinks its a simple job

or

Fork out £90 and have it reserviced elsewhere and the leak dealt with which they think is a huge job.

Meanwhile i keep checking the oil level in the car which isn't going down!!! Which i think is rather odd as there are huge patches of oil in three car parking spots at work :D and at home.

Either way it will get filled with better oil, thankyou for that suggestion x

Definately Option 1!!!!! You can talk to them about the paint job at the same time then and as suggested, go through all the areas that you are not happy with!

Yup, complain first, onyl go somewhere else as a last option, you're owed the work you paid big time for!

the leak is NOT an engine out job if it is the sump plug, you need to get the Hole the plug screws into 'Helicoiled' Once this is done you can use the plug again and this actually leaves the hole stronger and less likely to get stripped than before!

You're getting messed about and they're trying to shaft you.

Get the paint sorted and then Either do the leak yourself or get it done by a mini specialist. ask them to helicoil it. also check what oil the guy put in the engine when he serviced it.

P.S. I'm more than willing to teach you how to service your car, it wont cost even £50 to do it at home yourself and all you need is an oil filter wrench and a good socket set!
