I got a rust free second hand door which doesn't fit very well, and have seen on here that welding a length of welding rod to the door edge can solve the problem.

After looking on eBay, I see that mild steel TIG welding rods, (I assume it's these that I need) seem to be copper plated. Will this make it difficult to stick to the existing sheet metal, or am I looking at the wrong type of welding rods? Also they seem to come in different thicknesses. Is it best to get a thicker rod than the gap and grind back to the required thickness?

I can't imagine that MIG welding a thin welding rod to the door edge freehand is too easy, so would some sort of jig be useful to hold the rod in alignment during welding. (Say a piece of angle)?

Grateful for any help on this.

We always used 1/8 gas welding rod for this, it is copper coloured to stop it rusting whilst

stored, doesn't do the weld any harm it is welding rod !!

Check out soniks Project paddy he's the expert on this  ;D

Thanks, I now realise that Sonik has it pinned on the bodywork section with 45,000 views. I must be the only member on here that has not seen it!

If I could weld like Sonik, I would be a happy man.

Cheers for that. As mentioned the coating is fine on the rods and never had an issue welding them in place. 3.2mm 1/8th whatever you can get your hands on. I buy mine from BOC as its convinient.
