Hi as the title says, I've finished painting the inside of my car and I'm about fit the grommets and other parts such as seat brackets etc, I'm wondering if I rely on the fit of the grommet, or do I aid it with something like silicone sealant. Any advice greatly recieved

I use silicon grease to ease them in and help with a seal.

I don't like silicone anywhere in case the area needs painting again in the future. Traces of silicone make that problematic.
Rubber or mastic type sealants are fine. I use them around the grommet, ie in the groove, and inside eg to fill the spaces between wires in a bundle.
Oh, and if painting the area around the hole during a restoration, I use a brush around holes to get a thick build up of zinc primer, followed by whatever paint system you use. Same if drilling a hole in a modern car, as the hole tends to be a place where rust will start. The suggestion above of using Waxoyl is also very good.

Excellent, thanks for the replies, I've painted the floor both underneath and inside so it well sealed at its edges so any of the sugestions would be good. It seems that all of the options involve using something to aid in sealing, and not relying on the grommet alone.
Thanks jim

I'd just stick the grommet it no need for sealant it's not a boat..
