Hey all. I have a mk1 with a 1275 engine. Evidently its not a 1275 plus, just a 1275...whatever that means. Its fairly stock and it has a single carb thats nothing fancy and i know there are bigger ones that are available. Im new to minis and even more new to mini engines. My mini however is a mid 60's works replica. What id like to do is make some engine/performance upgrades that will give the car more power, keep it somewhat period correct but not result in changing the exterior of the car. Any thoughts out there? I'll try my best to go into more detail if needed but as I said this is pretty new territory for me.

all depends on the engine that is fitted. if original then it is a S and I would not do any thing to it, you say single carb so possibly not.

so which 1275 spec is it then?

Usual upgrades are the 'Stage 1 kit' which consists of an exhaust manifold (headers), full exhaust system, k&n pancake filter and water heated intake manifold. You'll need someone to fettle with your carb setting afterwards to get the best from the upgrades and to keep it running smoothly.

Doesn't seem like he knows an awful lot about A-series engines to be honest, PipthePiper, perhaps upload a few pictures for the local experts to inform you further!

Ok so the car was originally an 850 that got swapped for a 1275 so the time keeping the car original has long passed. Ive seen lots of kits but have heard lots of people getting little to no difference in power. Im guessing that's because they still need to upgrade rockers, engine boring or swap cylinder heads. Im trying to avoid dropping a good amount of money and time for nothing. All ive done under this hood since I purchased the car a year ago was drop in all new hoses, rad, thermo and a fuel regulator after replacing the fuel pump. The engine has quite a but of run on and is probably in need of a tune up. It also runs a bit hot at around 190. Since it was an 850 originally new disc brakes will be going in up front as it's currently all drums. Basically id like to get it somewhat period correct with engine upgrades. Here are some pics.

That last pic is mine vs the original. Aesthetically im in good shape 😉. The engine is def in need of some TLC

Looks like it already has some sort of aftermarket panel filter and exhaust manifold. If you're looking much more you're going to have to crack the engine (and wallet) open and invest in cam, head work, inlet manifold porting etc.

Cooperman and others have some good information on that thread.

Seen quite a few like that. Think they were on a Metro.
Engine looks like a "Smog" engine that has been de smoged. Extra drive on the water pump pulley and the closed off air ports on the head.

Sadly the air filter is "not currently available". Hang onto the one you have!

I do hope that someone makes another batch because they look just right and should work well.
