White +Ve Ignition Coil Connection Redundant?

Best Answer 1984mini25 , 22 February 2017 - 11:43 AM

If your using the ballast/9v coil you just leave that white 12v wire disconnected. As your right, the ballast wiring was just added to the existing loom and any of the 'old' wiring not used.

Same as the city being the base model it never had a rev counter, but the wires for one are in the loom behind the dash unused. And in the front corners under the front slam panel will be spare green wires for side indicators (later standard after 86) that were only ever fitted to exported models.

Although it does make it simple to switch out to a 12v coil/ electronic ignition, as you already have the 12v feed for the coil and the ballast loom is simple to remove.

I’m working towards the first starting of my 1984 Mini City and I appear to have a redundant white connection close to the ignition coil:

My car is fitted with a ballast resistor which appears to be a supplementary harness:

Is the white connection a redundant connection that would have been used on earlier cars with a standard coil? Or is it something else that I still need to connect?
