Dear all,

after 4 years of owning my mini (1978 998), here in Belgium, I've decided to take the path of least resistance:

Every year, I take my (well cared) for mini to the MOT, where it passes (almost), without a hitch - as a normal road car.

I've just returned from its' fifth visit, this time, enrolling it as an 'Oldtimer' - Classic car of more than 25 years.

The highly reduced test involves; tyres, lights & brakes. No more emissions tests!

Purely to reduce my insurance from €300 to €100.

Can't understand why the Belgium dvla think older cars need reduced controls.? Surely they need more.? Or at least the same.

So I'm €200 better off per year, and fiddling with the carb. an hour before I go to the MOT is a thing of the past..

And I still have too pay road tax: €35 a year!

Will still keep caring for it, and be vigilant over it's road-worthiness. Others, as you can imagine really take the **** when it comes to the condition of their older cars.

Sorry, but I don't know if the Police regularly stop these idiots.?

Ready for the weekend!!!

That's not even close to funny! But yes, the 'options' are a bit more appealing:

Bullet mirrors are now permanently fixed - no taking them off once a year!

And my lovely Mille Miglia 5x10" alloys can also stay on, all year round - by the way. anyone want a set of 3,5" steelies.? (Alloys protrude 7,5mm from the rear wheel arch!)

Because they take the view that "classic" cars are owned, loved and maintained by caring owners and Im sure in 99% of the case that is true. Its just the minority who flout the rules.

Excellent news!  That'll make things so much better and easier for you.

We don't have an MOT over here on the Isle of Man and it makes owning a classic car and modifying it a joy.

Indeed it does. And £12.50 a year for road tax sweetens it even more :-)
